INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had my first BCM chick from @ellymayRans hatch last night. It was one of my 6 eggs in the incubator. As of this morning, none of the other 5 have even pipped. I also haven't seen any chicks from the eggs my broody is sitting on. But I've been careful not to disturb her since I moved her. I may pick her up tonight after dark to get a quick look if I don't see or hear any chicks when I get home. I also may slip the hatchling under her tonight to see if she'll adopt it.

Just fyi, if you give her a hatched chick, she may abandon her eggs to show it how to eat. It depends on the broody, but if there is a chance her eggs will hatch late, I would wait a bit before adding the little guy to her brood. I've had a staggered broody hatch that went that way. Sorry for butting in, just a thought.

Its day 19 and someone is hatching! This is the earliest I have ever had them start hatching. Momma must have been extra warm! They usually hatch after day 21! Yay for mystery color silkie fluffy butts!

Yay! So exciting!

Miss Gray update.

-Still looking "bright" today but not moving around lots. She spent a lot of time today just laying in the grass but it was not a "sick looking" laying but just lounging.

-She started talking a little today. Yesterday she was silent.

-First thing in the morning she tried to make a nest in the grass clippings I had put in the indoor pen. When I realized thats what was going on, I brought in the portable nest box and gave her an annex and she went right in and laid her egg. All before 8:00 am.

-She is eating and I'm still able to give her a few drops of the wound formula on ground beef. Funny, though, she got wise to it and decided not to eat the pieces tonight that had the tincture on it. So I have to not put so much into each piece. I was trying to get the whole dose on 1 piece instead of spreading it out but she got wise to that.

-Yesterday when I first brought her up I had her in the outdoor portable pen on the grass. Overnight she was in a dog crate inside. When I got home at mid day I moved her outside on the grass to the portable pen. I tried adding Emma to the pen with her...Emma is the only one that is reasonably nice to her in general. That didn't work so I had to remove her again. Emma was intent on being sure that Gray knew she was in charge and wanted to give her a little peck on the back of the neck now and then. However, that's exactly where the wound is and I needed to remove her. She was causing undue stress being in there anyhow as it put Miss Gray on high alert.

Sounds like you are taking really good care of her and that she is doing well today. Sending good vibes your way!!

Bonbon Delivers! 21 days

I worked in the backyard all afternoon with the chickens, and every couple of hours, I'd check on Bonbon. I had felt totally positive about the hatch since Bonbon appeared to be a serious broody. Although I knew that logically she might not hatch at exactly 21 days, by late afternoon I was starting to brace myself for the possibility that the hatch would fail since she's a new mom. I thought of all the posts I've read from members who've posted that their broodies were supposed to hatch, but nothing had happened yet, and they were worried. Those posts were always followed by thrilling news of their broodies' hatches. Around 6:00pm this evening my son stopped by, and I decided to check on Bonbon. I looked in and heard peeping and then saw a teeny tiny chicken foot sticking out from under Bonbon! Then the miniature chick stepped out a minute to see the world-- and test out her voice! Here's a video: Bonbon's first chick 6:00pm May 7, 2014
kaphyper gave me great advice, and coincidentally, her Silkie hen Suki is in the middle of hatching, too! kabhyper said not to look under Bonbon to see what's going on because I could shrink wrap any hatching chicks. The eggs came from jchny-- 3 bantam OEGB and 1 bantam Mille Fleur. Hope they all hatch!! Thank you!

Congratulations! This is so adorable!!!

Maybe I should poll my neighborhood. I found out yesterday that one of my next-door neighbors thought that my barnyard mutt and my two black orps are roos. To be fair, the BM has a pretty impressive comb, and she acts the part.

I'd have a lot of neighbors to ask. There are several dozen houses within a cock's call of mine.
We live in the city--6 miles from downtown Indy--and we hear roosters crowing. We don't have any, but the sounds are coming from at least 2 different directions in our neighborhood. No neighbors asked us if we minded hearing roosters crowing.
In a city-sized lot, if the rooster was right next door, I'm afraid it'd be considered a noise nuisance.

The 3 so far. One more just out and a couple are pipped. :)

So cute! They look like they will be partridge, is that right?

I am sorry. This is just awful. :(

Probably won't b on for a week or so. Had a procedure on my back today, left my legs numb and arms weak. Feel like I've bn run over by a Mack truck...!
Congrats on all th new babies... Sorry for those lost or injured.
Keep me in ur Prayers please, this Sympathetic nerve block wasn't supposed t leave me feeling like this! It was a last resort procedure. Won't do another, hurts horribly!
Hope you get better soon!

Here's a picture of Bonbon's 4 bantam chicks! The two light colored ones are Old English Game Birds - Red Pyle color, the brownish chick in the back is a Mille Fleur d'Uncle, and the striped one in front is an Old English Game Bird - Wheaton color. (according to jchny, the egg donor!)

Below: These not so great photos are of my other "chicks" who are now 4 months old. I knew these photos would be too dark, but I wanted to put a name with the face-- because I finally named them!

L - R: "Ditzy" ~ a very fluffy beautiful Blue Splash Silkie pullet who isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer; "Bixley" ~ a pretty Blue Silkie pullet who has the fluffiest feet (too bad you can't see them-- or the faces of the blue Silkies); "Smalty" (smalt is a blue pigment) ~ a handsome Blue Silkie cockerel who hasn't caused any rooster-related issues yet; and "Eliza" an Imported English Orpington pullet ~ Blue Splash. jchny is now the owner of Eliza's brother, the Blue Roo.

Although they're the same age, the Silkies have always acted like the Orps were their parents. Now Eliza is pulled in two directions-- she loves her Silkies, but is really anxious to join the flock of 5 LF hens (who aren't very welcoming). Then, to confuse things even more, my only bantam hen Bonbon has four bantam babies.

Love seeing all of your chicks/chickens! Very cute!

Every chick I got from TSC died within a week. Won't use again, even though they usually have breeds I'm looking for. Wasted so much money!
What?? That is just not right! What kind did you get from TSC? I am just curious.

Huh - this whole time I've been planning our "hen only" flock and a big part of that was trying to be considerate of our neighbor's. We are rural and aren't bound by any sort of regulations as far as flock size, roosters, etc, but in the spirit of trying to be a good neighbor I had figured keeping a roo would be a bad idea. So, last night I was out moving the chickens (DH has promised that hell get the chicken door squared away this weekend so I don't have to carry all 16 birds back and forth every evening to get them their outside time in the run) and DH came by as I was moving my one "for sure" roo (have a few others I am questioning

) and DH says, "Are you sure you don't want to just keep him?" I said something about the neighbor issue and DH comes back with, "Well, if that's your reasoning both Charlie and Chuck/Jane were asking about that -- I told them you weren't keeping roos and they said that was one thing they'd been looking forward too because they 'love hearing a rooster crow'". WHAT? I have no reason to think they were being anything but sincere, so I guess it looks like I need to make a point to make a visit to both of them in the next week or two and hear it straight from them -- and if it's true I guess the dude is here to stay (and will need a name). I can't help but think about all the people who have neighbors that complain or cities that prohibit roosters, and here I have both immediate neighbors that actually WANT a rooster living here.

How bizarre. You would be so lucky if they do want you to keep the rooster!
A little off Chickens and back on my goats for a sec. Today we are selling our first Nubian kids today. A retired vet from my home town is buying a buckling and a unrelated doeling for his future breeding program! At first he was just going to get the buckling but loved our goats and how healthy they are! All our goats come from 5 star millkers and have great pedigrees. The bad thing is my daughter got really attached to the doeling he is purchasing. (We were not going to sell any does). But she knows we can go see them anytime and we might get future kids from them two. I'm really proud of what we have done with our herd in the amount if time we have been raising them. It will be tough to see them leaving us but we know where they are going snd it's to a wonderful farm!

This is so neat! Love to hear about goats. :)

atrueb00 - I got 3 Cornish x, 2 bantams, and 2 leghorns. And I don't have a TSC in my county. I happened to be in Bloomington and got them. It would've been a real waste to drive back and get more/trade. So, down 7 chickens. I was really looking forward to some fresh meat too...

Happy Friday everyone! :)

Last night after mowing the grass for the first time, we had a little daylight out and decided to let the mille fleur and silkie chicks outside with their mom for the first time. Probably the cutest day of my life (yes, I am very sheltered lol)!

Beardy (their mom) showed them how to scratch around and seemed to be very happy to be outside. She's been in the brooder for over a month now. Our top rooster was very pleased to see Beardy, who has always been his favorite, and he started to do a dance for her! I was a little worried at first cause he was getting so close to the chicks but none of the adult chickens hurt the chicks, they were mostly curious to see what the heck Beardy was doing.

This morning, I checked our other broody hen and found two of the guineas had hatched! There are 5 other eggs under her but none have pipped so far. So excited to go home and watch some chicken tv!

I really can't believe this! Wish you could get a refund or something, that is just too strange that all of them died within a week of getting them. I got 8 Cornish X from TSC back in early April and have all they made it so far (no thanks to our cat who attacked one chick, but it survived). I am just so sorry for you.

On the roos...
I thought I wouldn't ever have any either. The closest neighbor asked me if I was going to get a rooster before I had one. I told him I didn't think I wanted one and he said.. "I hope you get one. I love the sound of a rooster crowing. Makes me feel like I'm in the country."

So...you never know. And I do have a roo now. Unfortunately that neighbor passed last fall even though he was relatively young (under 50).
