The number had to be picked by a non-egg eater like my SIL. She told us she can't see why anyone would need to buy 2 dozen eggs at once.
Somewhere on here there is a posting from way back when of the government recommending every household have chickens. It said so many per person in the family. I think it was 2-3. I'll see if I can find it. It had the traditional Uncle Sam on it.

If you are wondering why the number of birds is six is because there are those that say if they are allowed 6 than they probably get by with 8. Next year they say I got by with 8 maybe I will try 12. This goes on until the flock grows to 22and somebody complains and you are forced again into the situation that you are in now. Everyone knows that it was because that SOB down the road can[t keep his dog up.
I am sorry for you but I think you are going about it the wrong way. I hope you can work something out that everyone can live with.

Thanks! When my DH and cousin butchered the cornish x, they skinned them instead of plucking out all those feathers. Next year my cousin said he wanted to build a homemade whizbang chicken plucker so we can leave the skin on. I am a vegetarian, so I just make the food for family but don't eat it. I can understand where you are coming from, I wouldn't ever want to eat my silkies as they are pets. I guess I think it is better to raise them knowing they are well cared for, butcher the chickens and enjoy all of them (I am using everything from the birds but the heads, feet, blood and skin/feathers) than to buy it at a store already processed. The cornish x were with us for only 7 weeks, grew very quickly and didn't have the personalities that our silkies have so it was easier to tell myself not to get attached. I thought I'd be sad the day they were killed, but it wasn't that bad at all. I got to learn how to butcher all the parts and got to feed my DH, 4 cousins and parents for a few weeks.I couldn't eat my own chickens, no idea what I'm going to do with my cockerels!!
