INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We added some new additions to our farm!

The larger one is a January gilt, and then there is one boar and one gilt from April!
The breed is Duroc. These pigs will start our breeding program. They are registered and come from great show bloodlines.
Who doesn't like bacon?!?!?!

Very cool! I've always loved the Duroc!

So I just came back from the cool breezes of the Allegany mountains - what in the world happened to the weather here????

My girls were obviously really hot from the point we got home at 3:00 till the sun dipped behind our house. So being a new chicken mom I am all worried about them of course. I found this post from the Chicken Chick and went to K-mart this evening in search of some kind of mister for the girls: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/04/beat-heat-how-to-help-chickens-survive.html

In the lawn and garden section I found these for sale half off (they were marked 25% off but rang up half off) can't find them on K-marts site but here they are on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/InfiniFlo-Personal-Flexible-Misting-Colors/dp/B00CLEU2HY so I only paid $6 each for them (originally 11.99). I was pretty excited. We'll see what they think about them tomorrow.

So if any of you are wanting something like this and have a K-mart nearby you might want to see if they have any left.

Hey all...a bit off topic but thought I'd share something that I found a couple days ago...isactually working!!!
I have an issue with mites (presumably because its bn raining so much the girls couldn't dust bathe???
Anyway I looked up "natural mite remedies" and came up with these, am using both and can't believe how well they are working!
Coop spray/treatment: in a spray bottle put 2c water, 1c cooking oil, 2T dawn (blue) dish liquid. Put on lid and shake before spraying, spray coop heavily first day in cracks, walls, and perches then once every three days for a couple weeks. This breaks the breeding cycle and kills the fresh hatches but doesn't harm your birds if they happen to "taste" it. If you see them on your birds spray them with this mixture: 10 oz water, 2oz garlic juice and a TOTAL of 1Tablespoon of essential oil (lavendar, thyme, lemon, tea tree, peppermint,or cinnamon). Spray directly on your birds being sure to get their vent area and under their wings. My girls were pretty cooperative on the second day of spraying and the coop smells fabulous!!!! Oh BTW I used a tsp of lemon essential out in with the coop spray (flies hate lemon!!! No flies or mites could be seen today!!! I used a combination of thyme and lavendar in the bird spray. So if anyone else is having issues give it a try seriously good stuff!!!!

I picked up my cornish crosses today and two moderns from Brad yesterday. I am pretty sure that puts me at 95. I will double count tomorrow. My dad called and asked me, what all I got and how many I had now. I told him 95 and he said, well does anyone have any chickens for sale that you want? lol, he wants to buy me 5 chickens so that I will hit 100. Little does he know, I will be setting eggs one Friday (along with Brad settingn a few polish eggs for me). But I am not going to turn down him wanting to buy me chickens lol. Now to go look around on craigslist and Ebay.

Hi guys!
Been AWOL a while now. My Dad had open heart surgery at 80 years old. This is his 2nd time, first was 1986. They replaced his aortic valve, rerouted a bypass and removed an anurism. He moved to progressive care today and has no tubes, IVs nothing! Was able to enjoy real food for the first time in over 2 weeks. He had the procedure last Monday a week ago. We are moving him to short term nursing care possibly this thursday. He is still very weak and needs PT to regain strength. 24 hour care with his new defib/pacemaker.
Thank you all, your kind words and thoughts have really helped me going through this

. 2 weeks ago I truly thought I was losing my Dad. He is a fighter, and I believe all the prayers and well wishes kept him going.

Chickenfest... I have very few committed to come. My RSVP date is this sunday, June 22nd. I can't see renting a building if we have so few attending. Please, PM me if there is ideas on what to change. This is our thread, our group... comments are welcome! Send me a message. Our campground is very active, and is hard to reserve the barn during the summer. I will need to let the owner know by sunday.
