INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@Mother2Hens

"You've said that you're a car mechanic, airplane mechanic, and a teacher. What ages and subjects do you teach?"

I'm an instructor at an aviation maintenance school, and they're all over 18. Some are adults, and some are not quite yet. I train aircraft mechanics, and I are one, too.

I've also worked as a tree cutter, HVAC installer, plumber, carpenter, baker of wedding cakes (I'll post a pic or two if I can find them), farm and field hand, snowboard instructor, rifle instructor, janitor, bartender, and I've done the usual food service and retail jobs. I was at a Petsmart for a long time, and think what you will about box stores but the employees there get a basic education in the animals they sell and service. I worked at a Borders bookstore for one of the Harry Potter release days, and that was a good time.

Oh, and I'm a US Air Force Vet.

That's me! Any questions? ;-)

Hi all,

I’m getting excited about :yiipchick Chickenfest.:yiipchick   It seemed like a good time to sit back and evaluate my flock to see who fits into my future plans and needs to be kept, and who doesn’t fit in.

Having done that, I figured I’d list out what I have available.  I can bring them to chickenfest if anyone wants me to, or if you are interested before that, just let me know.

Laying hens – All are 1-1.5 years old ($20ea)
2 Silver Leghorns – lg white egg
1 Egyptian Fayoumi – sm cream egg
1 Golden Penciled Hamburg – sm cream egg
4 Dark Cornish – sm brown egg
1 Gold Laced Polish – md white egg
 1 Buff Laced Polish – md white egg

POL pullets – some may have just started laying ($15ea)
4 California White – lg white egg
Several American Bresse x Cream Legbar – md blue to green eggs

I also have Roos available of course: (some are close to having that ‘one bad day’)
Cream Legbar ($5)
SLWyandotte x Egyptian Fayoumi (free)

All are LF.

Broody seems to be holding to her convictions. Day four of being in the broody buster and day ten of me continuously tossing her out of the nest box and she is back in there. I have decided to name her Tiffany Crystal after my cousin whose only ambition in life was to have kids, and who has also been in and out of jail a lot recently

. LOL we all have a branch of the family tree that we wish we could hack off! I am going to be getting some mixed eggs from Racin tomorrow so we can get this business started and over with! Oh well, at least she is going to be doing the work this time!! I just hope she manages to keep them alive or I will feel super guilty about trusting her!

Not a lot of action yet on my home made mouse poison, I opened the door today expecting to see mouse bodies all over the floor. Not so much. I guess time will tell... if the shed starts to smell in a few days I will know it was a success.

My Bielies and Isbars are 19 weeks old today...... none of the pullets SEEM close to laying and all my roosters APPEAR to be celibate but it could be any day at this point!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!

Leave the dark ones under her. If you aren't sure you can leave them all, but don't go past day 25 if you can help it. The dark ones may hatch. If they don't hatch see if you can get some day old chicks for her. Put them under her at night.

Thank you, and sorry for not getting back to this sooner! I went ahead and left them all under her.

I am really tempted to get her chicks, but I really was only letting her incubate to try and hatch some offspring from Po. :/ So I don't think at this point that I will, unless I have a moment of weakness. :lol:

@pipdzipdnreadytogo

On the "clear" ones, if you tip them, can you see it sloshing in the shell?  That is when I feel comfortable removing them.  If I don't see sloshing I still give them the chance just in case I didn't see correctly.  (And I actually looked at them after some of the others had hatched first.)

By sloshing, what do you mean? Things moving around in the egg? I did see one or two like that.

My guineas chased a hawk that was on the tail of their favorite chickens once. It was the most impressed I've ever been with them. May they RIP...

Lil' Gray started crowing this week. I didn't realize how much I loved my Carl (who I didn't want in the first place) until he was gun. Hearing Gray, who sounds like a dying dog toy, work on his crow makes me smile every time I hear it. Going to try and get some pictures of him and his girls this weekend to share.

I'm impressed as well. The most my Guineas have done is the time they mobbed a dead mole. :rolleyes: Usually they just scream and run away. The good news is the girls know to run for cover when the Guineas get particularly loud. They're loud all the time, but if they get really loud, that means there's something out there (even if it is just a vulture flying over or something). No one believes me when I say I can tell the difference, though.

I'm with you on the little crows. I went back and watched a couple of the videos I took of Po crowing when he was little. It made me smile, just to listen to his little dog toy squeak when he first started. :lol: Miss that little guy.

Thanks...many of our towns are actually getting with the program...it's just my little town has a tyranny type people in office. Small town...always seem to take their lead from a few others. I am going through with the complete political process of getting everything changed but I am afraid without a little pressure like a protest and media...nothing will change.
