Turkey egg now in the incubator. I'm replacing my tom tomorrow and after a bio-security time alone my hens will get the new tom. Still I would like a few of the first tom's offspring. He was so sweet.
So I am planning on starting a sizzle project. I have a frizzle bantum cochin roo and 3 black silkie girls and 1 white silkie girl I plan to use. The cochin is a mix of colors. I will get a pic tomorrow. Can anyone give me any advice or places to look up or read about when it comes to sizzles. like what you need and what genes and stuff will make a sizzle. I've look up a few things on the internet, but there doesn't seem to be to much info out there. Also if anyone else is doing sizzles I would love to hear your experiences. Thanks in advance guys.
There's a sizzle thread here on BYC you can ask all your questions there. My understanding is you would have several years of breeding in order to obtain what is considered the true Sizzle standard. Nice folks on the sizzle thread!
Are the RIRs the only ones you will be hatching?
Oh nooo. Other breeds also...will update what is hatching this year soon! Looking at the flock now. For sure EE and RIR. LO, BR, WL. SLW for sure. OEGB and MGB,.Beilies now..Have to look at what else is here that I have took in with this ridiculous zoning everyone is dealing with. Its really sad so many folks are still forced to rehome. Not too happy with local ordinance rulings. We all need to watch our town hall rezoning. So many folks can not even keep layers snymore/

This is what I have. I attached small bungee cords at some of the edge eyelets and hung bottles full of water so it stretches the netting and the chickens even our cats can still walk on it without ending up in the pool
I 1st heard about the Horiz nipples on this thread, and they intrigued me. My set up is below. I have a submergible heater inside that turns on at 35'F. (Just notched the lid for the cord) Last winter I had the regular (vertical) nipples. They froze when temps went down to single digits even though the water inside the bucket was liquid. They also dripped when my chickens drank, so I had to put a pan below or deal with frozen sand, poop, & ice below. I've been able to remove the pan, because the horiz ones don't drip. So far, I've never had any frozen nipples, but the real test will come when we go below zero. My water bucket is hanging, so I can adjust the height easily. We have one bantam, so I keep it a little lower for her.
Transition: No issues at all. They started drinking from it as soon as I put it in. (They were already used to the other nipples.)
Cost: Maybe $2 per nipple. I bought 10 so I can make chick versions & an extra bucket for the yard. The real cost was the submergible heater.

I have the same bucket and horizontal nipples. I have heat tape wrapped around and taped to the bottom and sides of the bucket and so far the water has not frozen with just that. I have a tank heater type heater for when it gets super cold but so far I have not needed it. I agree that the horizontal nipples are great and I'm hoping I can use it throughout the winter.
