CCL question for those of you that have had adults:
I have read several reviews lately from folks I know stating that their CCL roosters are mean and agressive. These are folks that have several breeds and have had experience with different rooster breeds. A couple of them quit keeping them because of the disposition of the roos.
Have any of you that have had ADULT roos for a couple years (CCL) had that experience?
I need help. I got this assortment of chicks a few weeks ago. I've determined one is an appenzeller spitshaubin . I thought this one was a cochin, but now not sure. I've never seen this color cochin. Could it be a maran?![]()
This one has lacy feathers.

Any ideas? It's gonna be fun watching them grow out.
Thought this last one wad a polish, but it has yellow legs and 5 toes.![]()
Pretty sure our Muscovy's a girl. She's maybe 8lbs (smaller than the Pekin drakes and one of the Rouen hens even), very small caruncle and still trilling about everywhere she goes. If you need to get rid of one, I may be able to house himOur gal's chocolate if that makes a difference. I've noticed her rapidly moving her neck back and forth and sticking her butt up in the air, but I have no idea what she means by it. My youngest named her "Giddy". He was really distraught when the little lilac one passed away.
Do you know if any of the ones who need to 'go' are one's we gave you?
If you need help processing, my husband and I might be able to arrange child care and come over. I'd like to learn how to do it and really need to get over my squeamishness (but I'm REALLY squeamish). My husband's done processing of roos before, but neither or us has processed ducks.
Another turkey poult passed away this morning. No idea what happened to it. It had a little gasping the night before but seemed healthy for the most part. Again, it waited to die until I picked it up and gave it something to drink. Found a wood chip in its throat and pulled it out with tweezers, but I'm not even sure if it was involved in this baby's death. Really weird. I was up past midnight last night because any time I would leave to do homework (ugh... chemistry) they would start peeping hysterically. Wound up having to bring my chemistry homework into the living room and do it in front of the brooder until they fell asleep.
I made some prosthetic moms for the chicks yesterday by twisting lots of collected feathers into pipe cleaners so that they formed a wing of sorts, then hooked it into the gaps on the brooder door and sides. Tossed in a bunch of molted chicken feathers and the chicks seemed a bit happier overall.Having turkey poults reminds me so much of when my own children were babies because I was having to sneak around like a ninja to get anything done last night. Love having them though![]()
Quote: Thanks! I see Akers has WELSUMMERS. I wonder where theirs were from. They just sell straight run. Those who have Welsummers and Cream Legbars, what is the weight of the adult hens please?
I haven't weighed my birds, but I'd put my Welsummer hens on the high side of mid weight, not as large as Brahmas or Jersey Giants, but equal to my Chanteclers and Barred Rock. CCLs are a bit smaller. A little bit larger than leghorn size, but lighter than the Welsummers.
I've probably raised 30 CCL roos, not a one has been aggressive. They can be tough on the girls until they mature and learn manners, but I've seen that in almost every breed. I don't cuddle with my birds, so they aren't too keen on letting me touch them, but I have no worries about them with kids.CCL question for those of you that have had adults:

It won't hurt them if they go into lockdown a day early. There are some who say they get better hatch rates with 4 days of LD instead of 3.Wow a lot of activity here lately!
I'm due to put some eggs into lockdown tomorrow night & saw one egg wiggling inside the turner. Should I move it to the hatcher earlier? The hatch date should be on Easter Sun, April 5 (maybe 4th). My broody started these eggs & I didn't want to toss them when we swapped them out or the "planned" eggs. (I saw development, so we popped them into the incubator.)
Either way, I'll take a pass on "licking" them.![]()
My first set of eggs for the year is in LD now. out of 14, I've got 4 external pips at day 19! The first set is 1 CCL, 2 BCM/CCL Olive Eggers, and 11 Bresse. Next set goes to LD on Friday. That will be more of the above plus Midget White turkeys and my first Mottled Javas!
Do you have any pictures of it?I made a "fake" mama hen too. I cut slits in a plastic container and tied strips of fleece that hang down in the container. They love it!
