INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So after delawarmomma posted that someone abandoned four chickens across from her business being the chicken lover I am agreed to take them in she said last night she was going to capture them and post picture but I have yet to hear from her or see the pics I fear the worst I hope she is ok... But just a curiose question she said she thinks they are bantams and would be my first bantams anyone know if they do better with chicks who are 2-3 months old or full grown full size chickens
The holiday weekend might have sidetracked her plans. Hope everything works out. When are you moving to Florida? If you do end up adopting the chickens, which is very thoughtful of you, keep in mind that you'll know nothing about their past, their ages, and most importantly, their health. IMO, it's extremely important that you quarantine them first. You would be very upset if you ended up with a combined flock of very ill chickens! Here is a link to quarantine info explained by one of our members, @pipdzipdnreadytogo (the one with the adorable baby duck pictured below): Quarantining Chickens
It's difficult to say which group the adopted bantams would mix better with because their ages and breeds might make a difference. From my experience with bantams and LF, grown bantams can hold their own with LF chickens. Their assertiveness often compensates for their smaller size! When your new ones are quarantined, that will give you time to get to know their personalities.

I'm not sure if her set-up was intended for feeding or escaping---she used a gate (I think) that had openings large enough for her chicks/pullets to enter an area, but the openings were too small for the other chickens to enter. My description is probably as clear as mud!

Anyway, I know you're mechanically-minded so you could figure out an ingenious solution!
@jchny2000 I loved hearing about your muscovy ducks! I didn't know they had color/pattern variety. Your chocolate pied is especially pretty!

I've also enjoyed reading everyone's "testimonials" haha about their favorite breeds. Very informative and interesting. Thanks for sharing everyone!

@flyladyrocks I admire your involvement in Indy Rezone! Since it sounds like there are unethical hidden practices that need to be uncovered, would one of Indy's local TV news teams be willing to do an investigation? On an earlier post, I think you were looking for website info. I ran across this site that you may or may not know about. It might be helpful to connect with people: Urban Indy

I forgot to add that I am sorry for all you're going through with your hatch, @ellymayRans ! You've dealt with a lot of poultry issues lately, and now you have a new mystery happening on a busy holiday weekend.

Very sweet of you thanks.

It's certainly gotten better since the opossum families have been eradicated I haven't lost another for several weeks now. Day or otherwise. Well minus the neighbor dog killing 2 of the poults. I just hope it stays that way.

I have 22 beautiful chicks that have hatched so far and I've only lost 2 when zipping. I think there's roughly 20 still to hatch.

I've been running all 3 incubators. My large home made one I used for the Pea, the styro and brinsea rotating hatcher/bator. If they happen to hatch in the styro I stick them in the brinsea because you can't hear them peeping in it like you can the styro one.

We had a busy day today and so I'll have to check in on my broody pea eggs tomorrow.

I still haven't figured out what the large lump actually is on the one I assisted but I think it looks like a cyst. ? It isn't squishy, it can be moved but isn't really hard either. I'm not sure, if anything, that I can do for it. I did put a shoe on it because 1 foot had toes that needed fixing.

It is a doll and acts very alert and healthy.

It's not letting me quote you re: fossils, but I would recommend the Falls of the Ohio next time you swing through Louisville. It's just off the Kennedy bridge (65), so not too far off 64 once you cross into KY. You just cross, then cross back to IN. Or there are alternate routes if you prefer...

But, yes, you can't go wrong with the world's largest exposed fossil bed. You will definitely find some resources there to point you toward what you have. If the water isn't high, you can walk over acres of fossil beds.

ETA: Oops! Looks like the interpretive center is closed until fall...but still a great place to go, you just won't get to walk through the museum. They also have great birding there! You can spot rare species.

congrats to all the good hatches and keeping good hatching vibes going to those who still have some to go. I have 30 in a little giant that should be hatching Tuesday

this is my 2nd attempt. The first didn't go so well and out of the 8 that did hatch... all but 2 died. seemed like every day I would lose 1.
Love all the chick pic's and the ducks too, thinking about getting ducks real hard but having a hard time talking DH into it. I have been talking to members and reading up on them and I think we could do it but it all comes down to DH...
Very excited about meeting a couple thread members and doing some bird swapping and getting @Jchny2000 little Doe, probably wont sleep tonight at all lol !!
Next week I have 14 maybe 15 new Silkie chicks coming very excited about that. Now I wont have to worry about breading farther to daughter. I know it is said that its ok, but I just don't want to. Besides I will have new colors. Love little fluffy butts

.

Now I have a mind teaser for ya all I asked before but I think it got lost cause I've got not even 1 reply... or ya all just dont like me anymore.. JK I know how fast this thread moves and how easy it is to miss things.
I have 2 more chicks that we are unsure of their breed. Not that it matters we are keeping them regardless, they are such sweet sweethearts no way they will go anyplace.

the first I think is a Cochin which makes DH VERY happy, the other we have no Ideal. Both are not supposed to be mixed with anything, but we were told wrong on so many chicks this year. They are RK chicks and ya know how the mislabeling is.

They are best buds and go everyplace together. The little black one has white face and black legs in case you cant make it out
Have a great 4th

Black one looks just like my Australorps did at that age. We took to calling them "penguin chicks" because they were about half white. White faces and bellies on all of them. The supposed Jersey Giant was almost all black and only had a little white on her belly.

The buff certainly looks like a Cochin. How many toes does it have?
