Both of these pics looks like chicken gout to me. Gout is a chronic and progressive disease. It is caused by too much uric acid in the body. The excessive uric acid leads to the formation of tiny crystals of urate that lodge in the tissues and joints. When these crystals lodge in the joints they cause lots of pain and joint destruction. They can also lodge in the kidney, reducing kidney function and in poultry; it can lead to rapid death.

I would do two things here. Cherries work really well in humans with gout to clean out the uric acid and help to heal. I would go to the store and buy some dried cherries. You can get the bird to eat more if they are dried instead of whole. I would feed her a small handful every day. Chickens usually love these things.

Next I would put apple cider vinegar in her water. All the chickens water for that matter. 1 tablespoon per gallon of water. Use a plastic container only. Change this water and make a new batch each day. ACV helps to raise the ph of the body and cleans out the kidneys, liver and is an over all good tonic.

Also, limit the feeding of high protein foods. Gout comes from eating too much protein. So skip the mealworms, the hard boiled eggs, meats, bugs, things of this nature. Stick with fruits and veggies as treats.

I am not sure you can completely sure you can cure gout but if you work at this and catch it in time, you can save the birds. Gout eventually causes kidney failure.

If you have another thread started in the emergency section, (I think I read here that you did,) you might post these pics for more opinions on this, however this is NOT bumblefoot so I would not cut into any of this and I feel this is gout. As for the pus, I would gently squeeze anything that comes out and and apply some neosporin and keep it all wrapped. I would not cut into anything with this situation.

Keep us posted!! :)

Thank you so much for your help with this. I have done some research into it and there really isn't very much for chickens. I am going to try everything you said. My chickens are free range so I'm not going to be able to limit their bug consumption. But I will keep everyone posted on how the little guy is doing in the days to come. Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry about the bugs they catch, but keep the high protein treats away from them. You might be surprised about the cherries and how much they help. I know of people that have been helped with eating cherries everyday and their gout improved greatly.

Good luck and keep us posted over the months! :)

My poor Phillis. (Polish) has this... it's a huge hole..

Hi, you've added your post to an old thread.

You'll have more success getting replies if you start a new thread (look for a white box in the upper left part of your screen) over on the emergencies forum, this link will take you there:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

A photo might help to figure out what's happened to Phillis.

Good luck to you and your girl!
