Good morning. I have a Polish hen that seems to have infectious coryza. Her eyes are swollen shut and weepy, she is congested and making noises as she breathes. She also has an odor coming from her face.

I'm giving her tylan 50, and have her separate in a hospital crate. The rest of the flock is getting treatment as well. A few are rattley, but no swelling.

My question is how do you make her more comfortable as this runs it's course? It's heartbreaking to hear her making noises as she tries to breathe. Is there a chicken "Vicks?"

Thanks so much for any information.

You may want to try and get some sulfa antibiotic from a vet to treat her. SMZ-TMP is one you may find online, but sulfa is better to treat coryza. Probiotics in the feed may help keep her gut bacteria normal. Offer water often and try adding water to some feed in a bowl to get more water into her. Vet Rx may be close to Vicks, but neither one will treat coryza. Both Vicks and Vet Rx are not harmful though.

Coryza can spread to your other chickens, and infected chickens may become ill time and again, since it is a chronic disease. Consider all chickens in your flock now carriers, so I would close your flock to birds going in or out of the flock. Once all birds die off, then wait several weeks to start a new flock with healthy chicks.

If she has infectious coryza it will never go away. She can and probably will get sick again and again.
I do not think Tylan 50 is good enough to help with the symptoms, is a vet and option?
Is culling an option?

The vet isn't an option unfortunately. Her water also has oxytetracycline in it. I'm in California so getting antibiotics is tough. I stocked up on some before the law took effect.☹️

The medicines you have can all treat mycoplasma (MG,) but coryza may require sulfa drugs separately or in addition. You may want to get her tested by a vet or local extension agent, or cull and get a necropsy by your state vet to get a diagnosis. That would help if others get sick. MG and coryza can look similar, and some common secondary infections with certain bacteria auch as pseudomonas, E.coli, and proteus can also smell bad. So it is not always easy to diagnose MG or coryza correctly. Each type of bacteria may require a certain antibiotic, so you can save money by not just treating willy nilly. Respiratory diseases may enter your flock by adding birds who have been exposed before.

hi, mikmi717-
how did your hen turn out? i’m in a similar situation with the runny eye. she’s not sneezing or rasping - just the eye goop.

Welcome to BYC. Do some research on mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and infectious coryza in this link to try and figure out which one your hen may be dealing with:

thanks for the link. i have read so much my eyes are crossed. the discharge doesn’t stink. i’m treating with talam 50, vetrx on the nostrils and an ointment on the eye - the bottom rim is pink. she’s eating, drinking and pooping so i’m crossing my fingers. i’m new to chickens but want to learn and do
my best to take care of them.
