Information please. What are "bumps" or "bump-ups"?

Please note that "bumping" a post to get it seen more / get replies is against our rules. Imagine if we allowed it and then everyone that was impatient or wasn't getting a response started bumping their topics.

If you're post isn't getting attention you can always post more information, ask better questions, or maybe realize that peeps may not have anything to add. Just posting, without adding any helpful information, to bump a topic to the top just isn't cool.

See now I'm confused again:

That's not the same, because it's self-bumping... but the last sentence seems to mean any bumping.

I've done it, only in the EDIaC (as far as I recall) and will stop but sometimes I'm getting more info out of the OP too.

yea, sorry. i am confused now too. Let's say someone made a funny post, and we used
yuckyuck.gif

and wrote nothing else. is that a comment or bumping?

or what if we gave what little help we could and then said,' I hope someone more helpful comes along.'
is that bumping?
Would it be better to not say anything that to say, 'I am sorry about your chicken, i hope you get some help."
or writing back to the OP to see if there is improvement, is that bumping? or just when we blatantly go "bump"?
I want to be good.
or what happens if we distract ourselves and momentarily talk about a subject related to the topic but not directly the topic? kinda like I did right there, is that a no-no?

And

Links to poo sites and stuff... is that okay? I ...

Well, how I see it...

A bump is a bump when the poster says it's a bump.

For example, "I don't know, but here's a bump."

Compared to, " I'm not sure, but maybe somebody else can help you soon."

The difference - the second makes the OP feel like they are not being ignored, but help will soon be with them.

But I disagree, I have given a bump and said bump, also I have given a real post (asking for more info) or have bumped w/o saying it was a bump but did not -contribute- I see both of the "I don't know" post as the same - (I have done it)

Instead of just bumping, what about helping the OP to find an answer? Like doing a quick google search or forum search and say , "Hey I found a similar answer here <insert link>.
That way it is a win-win.
