Information please. What are "bumps" or "bump-ups"?

Hi All,

I'm pretty new to BYC, & I'm a little leery of this "bumping" rule!

If I respond later to a comment that someone has made on my initial post....is that considered bumping?

And I totally understand why BYC has rules.....Humans are well......... "unfortunatley" Humans!!!

Thanks

I hope not because if someone takes the time to reply to a question & you just want to thank them or you are still looking for more input the thread will be bumped whether you use the word bump or not. Very gray area, mods will have to use their judgement. This is such a wonderful community I'm sure these rules won't change that but maybe it will force people to search & do some legwork.

Obviously I am new as well

this is my take on the matter

I think you are over-thinking it. To me it's when someone posts...then waits like 30 minutes (or even a couple hours) and then reposts as though they expect that there is someone sitting at the computer waiting, anxiously, to personally answer their question immediately...without realizing that there are tons of people on here...some may know something to help them and some may not AND that even though the post is on page 5 it doesn't mean that it is not going to be answered...people are busy.

Agreed!

IMO: If you don't get an answer to a question within 24 hours, it would be fine to reply with more details on the question and the situation and it is doubtful that this would ever be considered bumping.

yes, you are right. I am over thinking it and I will continue to do what I do,... and I am sure the mods will be kind enough to give us a graceful and kind note that we are in for it, before the actual points get awarded?

The new members are usually in a panic because they are searching for help for a sick or dieing animal. I understand their urgency. I usually do what Ms. lacy suggests, but sometimes I have no luck either.
I do not want them thinking that no one cares that their chicken is stuffed full of Styrofoam.
but, other than mineral oil, what do you do? comfort and apologies. That isn't bumping, that's just being kind.

Mkay, I will try to make this simple...

Say you posted a topic about a sick chicken and you need help fast. Nobody posts anything for a while and your topic falls down to the bottom of the page. Since you need urgent help, you want to get your topic back up to the top. Here are some examples of possible responses:

~Acceptable~
Ask another, more specific question
Post a picture
Give more specific information that could help find a solution

~Unacceptable~
Bump.
I don't know the answer, but here's a bump.
Anybody?
Does anybody know?
Please help!
(There are so many variables to unacceptable, but you get the point...)

People needed to know that.

I understand how some people could panic when they need urgent help, but people will start getting annoyed and stop replying to that person's threads. I'm glad someone else agrees.

We are a little more lenient in the emergency section regarding bumping. We realize that people get distraught when their pet is ill, so we allow for that.
