Ingrown feather?

I have seen the preen gland turn red on one of my chickens and thought it was an ingrown feather. I used advice someone posted to pour sugar water on ingrown feathers snd redness went away...

I have a chicken i pet alot and it seems sometimes the gland is raised and prominent. Sometimes not. Anyone hzve any thoughts on this?
