Hi there, would anyone know how to treat flesh wounds on chickens after a fox attack?
Two of my girls were bit before I could chase off a fox. One has some missing tail feathers and a couple of punctures which I've carefully cleaned and put antibiotic cream on. The other chicken, however, has a bit more blood from her back near her wing. Its stopped bleeding now and she is breathing and functioning fine except she can't stand on both feet. I've checked her legs and wings for breaks, but I think she was bit in some thigh muscle and is favouring one side of her body.
I just don't know how I can clean her up without her injuring herself anymore. I tried to stick her in a washing basin with just a bit of water but she started freaking out so I put her back in her bed. How would I go about cleaning her? Should I just leave her until the sounds aren't so fresh. It just happened a few hours ago while the chickens were free ranging. Who would have thought a fox in the daylight in the city?

Usually when bird suffer a traumatic event, I give them a few hours in a dark quiet area to recover, Then I use sterile saline to flush and examine the wound. You can also use a weak betadine solution. Try to remove feathers near the wound. Once the area is clean, pat it dry and apply a healing ointment. Some folks like to use triple antibiotic ointment. I like to use an antibiotic spray as it prevents an oily sticky mess. If needed use a hen apron to keep her from pecking at it. Keep her in a hospital cage in your house to keep flies from getting to the wound. After about a week or so you try to reintroduce her to the flock. Be aware that most animal bites require appropriate antibiotic therapy and a veterinary visit is always the best way to go. Good luck!

Thank you so much for replying! I'll pick up some supplies in the morning and give it a go. How would u remove the feathers around the wound tho?
Thanks again!
