Injured Duck - Advice, please!

When i drove to the vet with my Limpy Duck i had him sitting in a plastic crate on the passenger seat, so he could look outside of the window. He really enjoyed the trip back and forth (not so much the vet herself with that syringe) and even greeted a police officer in his patrol car. He was just too busy watching to be afraid.

Well, I just got back from the avian vet and our injured duck (Ash) has a swollen knee and toe. Otherwise, she's perfectly healthy. :celebrate

The vet prescribed anti-inflammatory medication to help get her back up and running (literally). Which leads me to another question: what special treats do you hide your ducks' pills in?

You can try smashed peas and wrap around the pill, mine will take a pill if I smooch bread around the pill I always toss a few tiny pieces at them first then the one with the pill. Your going to have to do this with her by herself or someone else may get the pill. It helps if they’ll eat out of your hand

Treats? - Only after that:
  • Grab Duck
  • Ignore protest
  • Open bill
  • Insert coin and push down
  • Count fingers
  • You both have a drink
  • Vote »yes« for duck smilies, see below
---
Please vote »yes« here if you would like to have Duck and Goose smileys on BYC.

Well, I just gave her the first pill on my own (vet gave the very first dose yesterday). While looking through my options in our kitchen, I remembered that our girls go insane over bananas.

So I herded them all into what's left of our small vegetable garden (they've already eaten most of the veggies), and then further herded the injured one into a dog X pen (I just opened a full side so she wouldn't have to step over the opening in the gate). That way, they could all still see each other without me having to worry about the wrong duck getting the medication.

Obviously, they were still stressed about being separated by a fence; but the moment I started tossing out banana chunks, it was a duck feeding frenzy! Once all three were wrapped up in wolfing down banana chunks, I slipped the pill into a chunk and tossed it to the injured girl. Only took two attempts for success.
