Injured rooster by racoon

Hi I'm new to this group, I have a rooster that was attacked by a racoon early this morning after being let out of coop. It was around 8am. I ran outside and the racoon had my rooster I quickly grabbed my gun and shot at it (i missed ) my rooster was alive but badly injured. His feathers from tail are almost gone only 3 are left and he was all bloody from butt. I washed him and inspected him and he has a open wound about 2" in butt area, I rinsed the area patted dry and applied triple antibiotic cream. Any advise on what else I can do? Hes eating well and drinking water. Hes walking fine. I brought him inside and have him in a kennel. I feel so bad for him and I'm very sad this happened

That happened to a rooster we had when we were kids. My dad greased him up on all the raw, sore spots with Vaseline and kept him in the garage and nursed him until his skin was reasonably covered. He lived a long time after that, but he was the worst rooster ever. He would attack my dad constantly. I’m still mystified why he worked so hard to save him. I’m guessing yours is a nice boy, though. Best of luck with patching him up!

It sounds like he will recover. Where are you located in the world, in general (no addresses are required here, just an idea of your climate)? You can update your profile with that information.

If it is cold (not fly season), you can keep him in a large crate in the coop away from all drafts so he can remain with the rest of the flock. Keep food and water in the crate with him. His wounds should be cleaned and disinfected twice a day until the hole closes over. You can use Vetericyn spray, Hibiclens or a Betadine spray to disinfect the wound. Then reapply the triple antibiotic ointment. A nice thick layer will be important to keep dirt from getting in the wound.

If he were mine, I would also be giving him some Poultry nutri-drench or Rooster Booster in a mash for 2 or three days to boost his energy and help him recover from the attack and help him heal.

Hi thank you for commenting and my rooster named jacob is doing great I've been washing his wound with soapy warm water and applying a spray I got from tractor supply . Hes doing much better and It it's already scabbing , so I'm happy hes recovering.my jacob is a sweet rooster he comes up to you so you can pet him but he will chase squirrels if they get in the yard lol

Hi thank you for commenting and yes I joined due to the roosters injury but I've seen very helpful comments , I use warm soapy water and I'm using that spray vetericyn and triple antibiotic cream as well . I live in southeast texas weather. This year we didnt get hit with major coldness . I've kept him all week in our garage in a extra large dog crate and he is doing really good his bottom is drying up and getting a scan already I let him out today to get some sun and exercise and then washed his butt and Medicaid it and back to his crate he went.
