Insulate or not to?

I was wondering if I should insulate the outside wall and roof of my coop... Those are the only 2 walls that have direct contact to the outside. I live in NJ and our winters can get pretty cold.

Ja I would insulate them, especially in NJ winters can be cold.

if you insulate you shouldn't need extra heat in the winter.

We must be on the same brain wave, I just posted within min. of you about this. I think I am going to insulate, here in SD it gets cold! But how much cold can the chickens tolerate?

Did you use regular fiberglass insulation? or the foam covered in the tinfoil like stuff? sorry I dont remember what it's called

I use what ever is handy, but I like that bubble wrap /tin foil stuff. its light and very easy to use. if it gets wet (humidty) it doest hurt it.

I don't think it's needed. I only insulate the ceilings because of a metal roof. I get your same winters.They need shelter not insulation.Mother nature made them that way.I've seen people insulate then leave a window open anyways for ventilation.Save your money.Your chickens will love you either way as long as you feed and water them. The only winter protection they need are for their feet.Use good flat wide roosts.(full 2x4) Will

we had -14 this winter and the whole coop being insulated was nessary. It was not the temp that was the real problem it was the wind -40 wind chills, the insulation helped keep the wind out it sealed the coop.
