Integrating a new Rooster?

Today I picked up Sir Wilfred, my new Chantecler 11 month old cockerel. Seems to be a calm bird.

Breeder opined that his button comb was large, had good feet. He is pleased that Wilfred will get 16 hens and keen at the blood line mix.

When asked about how to integrate he just put them together and let them sort it out (I will isolate for a month and have the flock without a rooster for the same month.
What?
No pictures of your new boy?

We all need to see him. 😁

I have the original White Chantecler. They are large Fowl, the 1st original breed from Canada. Bred by a Trappist monk in Oka Quebec over a ~10 year period up until 1917, admitted to the APA in 1921. Bred to thrive in our winters.

The Buff Chantecler came later in the 80s, not yet(?) admitted.

This is my boy with a chicken friend for her initial inspection. Sir Wilfred will replace a Black Copper Maran mix that attacked her at least a couple of times; after 10 minutes Lindsay said "such a good boy" as you can see the breed is known for friendly calm demeanor.

Why do you need to cull your roo? Roosters can indeed get along with each other.

I have had as many as 6 males running with the flock for their 1st 4 or so months. I also kept two full grown ones together with the flock for close to a year. I have had a single roo for 12 months.

The difference with one vs multiple cockerels/roosters is immense. Testosterone fuelled aggression vs healthy male dominant ranking behaviours.

I have chickens for their eggs; i have a male to perpetuate my flock. My focus is now adding Chantecler hens although I will hatch from my coloured egg producers, very interested to see that result.

Breeder Integration Advice

I asked the breeder for his advice on integration.

He first confirmed isolation for 3 weeks (I will isolate for 4). Then said put Sir Wilfred with the hens and let them sort it out.

This is likely how I will proceed.
"Isolate".....like quarantine or within sight of flock?
