Interested in raising chochins...

Standard cochins can be hugh! My standard roo is almost 3 feet tall. They are gentle giants and a pleasure to watch. They say they are not very good layers but I get eggs almost every day from each hen. I have one hen that will walk in the house and help herself to dog food if you leave the door open.

I got into the bantams after the standards. They are a little more aggressive, maybe because of their small size. This is not in a bad way but my little black hen rules the roost here. She'll take on a big hen anytime and walk away the victor.

On another note I think the bantams are a lot more manageable just because of the size and you can keep a lot more since they take up less space

A little info on the Cochins International site. It hasn't been updated in over a year. If you go to master breeder points you can get some good names on the different varieties.

me: my name is ohiofarmgirl. and i'm addicted to my little french hen.
all: hello ohiofarmgirl......

so we got (ok i chicken-napped) a lovely little cochin from a pal and of all my hens she is the only broody one so far this year! is this normal? to they tend to be broody?

for me this is VERY desirable as i'm trying to get a lot of 'home made' chicks this year. as the newcomer she is not dominant but wowza she has a growl on her!

My cochins are always going broody. I have to keep moving them around to break them up. If you want broody hens they are definately the way to go. It's not good in my case because I am wanting eggs to incubate.

I had one broody cochin, and she was the best momma, ended up successfully covering 18 eggs! (I diddnt want that many there, she kept getting donations.

One of my other cochins has suddenly taked to laying behind a hay bale instead of in the nests, so I think she is thinking about it.

I am gonna take some nest eggs out there today and see if she takes the bait.

I LOVE my cochins! They are all hatchery stock and are not as big as they should be, or as fluffy, but I love them anyway!
