Interesting news on my school district,,, Not a rant

I did hear that and that is what lead me on my rant about bus fares. Who the heck in Phelan is within walking distance??? I mean really!!!! What's gonna happen is - 1 person will pay the $350 and one kid will ride and it will cost the district $1000 for that trip. I see alot of home schooling out here in the future.

Having grown up there, when I was little, we had a half mile walk to the bus stop (if we cut through the desert); however, my sister could walk to the HS (we lived near the Mormon church).

I think there will be more empty buses and traffic will stink more with lots of parents carpooling kids together (one parent bring several parent's kids!). I know that the school districts are hurting, but it seems the teachers and kids are taking the brunt of it oppose to the higher administration. From kindergarten to the university level. It is craziness!

The schools are getting cut so much by the hurting state budgets. The state says "We don't have the money, sorry school districts", then the schools say "We don't have the money, sorry parents and students" and the parents say "We don't have the money, now what?!?!" It is just the trickling effect and the kids pay the price.

Which brings me to ask about the lottery.... If you remember, the proceeds were suppoosed to go to schools. SUPPOSED to....

when I was in high school. I would go to breakfast and take a muffin to go and then eat it outside. Same with lunch, but then I would take my fruit. I never heard of a take no food out of the cafeteria rule. Around here any way..

This year I took my DD to Christian School and they are not as bad but more fundraisers which it is a good thing for them. I would try to support her school as much as I can moneywise and her education and structure is so much better than the public school she was at last year.

Around here the walking distances are: 1 mile for Elementary, 1.5 miles for Middle School and 2 miles for the High School. Now remember, we are not a big city, we are a very rural area with lot's of wild dogs and coyotes, and skunks, and just acres and acres of plain old desert. Would you want YOUR child walking to school in Elementary school by themselves because you had to go to work earlier or whatever the reason, through desert with sand dunes and mesquite bushes taller than them? No paved roads with nice sidewalks? Dirt roads,, a few paved,, some with shoulders most without, it's not safe. The County and Districts do not work together at all.

We can't take food out of the cafeteria either...it is a state type mandate based down from the federal with strings attached...if you do this then we will...bunch of crud..

Kinda like the fact that you can't let kids bring soda and such into the lunchroom. This goes for kids and teachers...you gotta put it in a cafeteria cup...we look like a bunch of...well...you carry what you want in a brown sack! lol!!! and pour it in your glass...I just thought of how bad that sounds and looks!

We could have kids walking in excess of 15 miles to school w/o buses but so far that isn't on the block for us...

The walking distances I posted are the rules right now. If you live within those distances, you walk. We don't have soda machines and candy machines anymore,, I think that's great. They aren't allowed to bring soda either but during classroom parties and such we let them bring some.

Our kids are no longer able to take any food or drink out of the cafeteria. They also banned all water bottles in any way, shape or form because some 6th grader brought alcohol to school. My daughter was a great water drinker and always took it to school...not anymore. They also cannot bring backpacks to any class besides homeroom because one kid got caught with a pack of smokes. Girls can carry tiny purses for...you know...but that's stupid because if a maxi can fit in it...so can a pack of smokes! Our school district talks about cuts and yet our elementary has these "smart boards" which have to cost a good bit...I don't get it.

I've really about had it...have been thinking of homeschooling for years, it seems so overwhelming to me but I may just have to bite the bullet...
