We picked up our first chickens on Saturday - 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks, and 2 EE (billed as Ameraucana...but I can't tell the difference LOL). The EE's were hatched mid-January and the rocks were hatched at the end of January.

Hubby and I noticed last night that they went from being basically quiet to a lot of little peepy noises as the sun went down and they started getting sleepy. We've also noticed that our little cross-beaked girl purrs when she's pleased with something, which is not a noise I expected to hear from chickens.

So when do they usually start making the clucks?

You will be able to tell when their voices start breaking, it's both very cute and quite amusing. It starts to happen when they're around a month old, and they're fully clucking by two months.

Purring from the chickens sticks though, I often hear them do it when they're on the nest, laying an egg. :p
