Internal Pipping

another baby!

Hi all, I have an external pip this morning, but on egg 3!

Egg 1 has had a bruise for almost 48 hours now. Is he ok? Can he still breathe? Getting worried.

Thanks x
Hi, I'm no great expert (this is only my 4th hatch) but if it was me and I could safely do it without losing too much humidity - then I would candle to see if it has internally pipped and to see if it's moving. Maybe one of the more experienced hatchers will have some better/sound advice for you. If it's moving then return to incubator and wait a while longer to see if it externally pips. If no movement and it has internally pipped then I would be making teeny tiny hole carefully in air sack part of egg then returning to incubator to wait. Please do not take my advice as verbatim because, as I said, I've only done 4 hatches. I will be online most of today if you need any further help.

Thank you, you gave me the kick up the bum to do it! Managed to open the incubator without the humidity dropping below 70% so hopefully 3 will be ok now he’s pipped. It climbed quickly to 77% after.

Egg one is still moving and when I put a tiny hole in I could hear him chirping. When I candled him I could see his bill and feel him tapping. There was a shadow of a line where he’s been tapping too so I hope he won’t be long. I assume the hole will give him a bit more time if he’s slower. I hope it’s big enough as it’s only a needle width but I was time conscious.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

They tend to rest a bit now so leave alone if all eggs are moving. This part can take anything from 12-24 hours ish whilst they absorb the egg sac and the blood veins receed. Nevertheless, keep me posted if you need anything.
My other 4 eggs are in the resting stage too, hopefully today or maybe tomorrow for hatching.

Thank you, yes egg 3 is definitely resting now. I read it can take up to 48 hours from ‘pip to zip’ can’t it. I feel fine as long as he can breathe in there. I was just worried about 1 running out of air with him having a bruised shell and no pip yet. But now he has a tiny hole I can stop panicking!

I’m not worrying about number 2 yet as to be honest I feel like that one could be a lost cause. I think his only hope is to spend a few more days in a drier incubator once the other 2 are hatched and in the brooder.

Thanks for staying in touch both!
Laura

Egg 3 has a bigger hole now! Still nothing from 1 or 2 though. Can’t believe 1 hasn’t burst through yet, this is torture! Haha!

Good morning!,
How is your hatch going?
I had a frantic day yesterday, however, all 6 hatched with 5 in brooder and one still in incubator recovering as had pipped the wrong end and I had to assist after 40 hours for it to hatch. It is very weak but looking good. The other 5 are all bombing around the brooder causing mayhem.
This is the video of the 3rd one to hatch.............

Good morning!

Oh wow, what an absolutely gorgeous video! A memory to always treasure. Beautiful duckling. I feel so proud of them! Haha!

Mine have progressed incredibly slowly but it’s progress nevertheless. Egg 3 is now more than just a pip and egg 1 pipped lastnight, but he/she’s still having a rest. Nothing from number 2 still as expected. Fearing the worst for him/her unfortunately but staying hopeful that he may just need longer to cook!

I’ll keep you updated. Enjoy your gorgeous ducklings!

Hi, yes egg 3 is defo zipping. Mine took ages to zip as well yet my other 3 hatches once they had started zipping they hatched within the hour. I find it amazing that from hatch to hatch you can do EVERYTHING the same yet each hatch is completely different. There is no manual for this you just have to go with your instincts and common sense. What day are you on now and what are you hatching?

Just goes to show they’re as individual as we are aren’t they!

I’ve got white crested ducks hatching, can’t wait to see them with their funky hair dos - haha! I’m on day 30 now! I think my incubator must have been quite cool, I did play it on the cautious side as I thought I’d rather them take a bit longer than get cooked. I just went by the temperature between the incubator reading and the hygrometer thermometer which I placed at the bottom of the incubator. I think next time I’ll get an additional analogue thermometer to go inside too.

Are yours in the brooder now or still drying out?
