International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Shafting is when the quill/vein down the middle of the feather is lighter or a different color than the rest of the feather.

This is a picture of my best cockerel when he was younger. He has both copper leakage and shafting.

Wouldnt you say 90 percent contain that, and i know in the breeding pen those cockerels with that chest leakage can be a benefit. I got some overly black hens that I'm going to pair with some of my new cockerels with good chest color. Im my experience you almost need 2 lines of perfectly balanced birds to get both good hens and cockerels. Its difficult or even impossible to get both male and female perfectly colored of the same line. Atleast for me is been that way.

Yes you just about have to maintain two separate male and female producing pens and balance pairs out well to get birds coming as they should. A pair that produces a well colored cockerel without chest leakage may produce pullets with less copper in their hackle. A pair that produces very well colored pullets may produce overly colored cockerels.

Yes a male with chest leakage can be a benefit to put more color into the hackles of his daughters. Breeding a bird with shafting isnt ideal, but I'm doing my best to keep color in the back of my mind this year so I can get type, topline, and all that worked out. My best male has shafting and I could care less right now. His leakage isnt bad enough to hurt him in show but the shafting will knock a point or two off.. no biggie. I will mate him to Queen, my best typed hen with the nicest tail angle in hopes to produce more decent tailed birds. I want to gett these high tails behind me. Queen doesnt have a whole lot of copper so I think it will work out. :)

Yea, those high tails suck. That's one of my demons also, one generation at a time is what i tell myself.

Here are my two older pullets. I got from Harvey. I am guessing they are about 8 weeks old.

my boys had black chests. hen had some copper in hackles. one of their 3 pullets has really nice copper in hackles and the other 2 have medium (not so bad) copper. beginner's luck!
