International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Are you saying that yellow one is a fbcm? The other black one is very mossy, she would make a good layer but i wouldn't use her for breeding. Are these of the same flock as your cockerel you posted earlier? If so i see why he has that drastic of a halo. I would try and get some better stock if you plan on trying to breed, with the birds you have you'll be breeding forward a lot of issuess that plague the marans breed.
Oh no the yellow one is one of my EE that got in the picture. These 2 pullets were purchased from the same place I got the cockerel from. I can get better stock I want to do this right. Recommendations on breeders would be most appreciated. Also, is there somewhere I can go to read up and learn more that would have pics? Thanks so much for your input.

Yes the mossy hens and the overcolored cockerels go hand and hand. the marans breed is a very frustrating breed when it comes to breeding, i read about marans all day everyday, i search all the facebook pages daily, the marans of America site daily and this thread, you guessed it, daily. I eat, breath and sleep these dang chickens. It's just a learning process. this thread, like ole man Tom said contains priceless information about this breed.

I recommend getting stock from Harvey Moore. You can look him up on facebook and contact him. He has very good quality Marans, and several different varieties such as silver birchens, wheatens, white, black and blue coppers, cuckoos, blacks and maybe more. I recommend starting with one variety to avoid becoming overwhelmed. He sells started chicks and they arent cheap but you can rest assured they are good quality. If you buy cheap, you will get cheap. You get what you pay for in terms of quality. If you invest in good quality stock to start you will avoid a lot of headache, heartache, frustration, and disappointment. Marans are a very challenging breed. I hope you find some good birds to work with. Best of luck to you! Stick with us on this thread and you will learn with the rest of us. As mentioned before, the pages in this thread are loaded with good information. Read the Marans standard of perfection so you know how the breed is supposed to look. There are Marans websites and facebook groups also. :)

You should feel good. Your Marans are very good quality birds. I hope you get into into showing. I think they would do very well. :)
We'll thank you, I'm very happy, 4th line is a charm!! They have their issues, not to serious but there are issuess. I think hightails are going to be something i have to watch for and improve, there just a little higher than i prefer. But i think i got a good starting point, now it's time to put in the work and make them great.

I look forward to seeing your work with them. I have come to terms with the fact that my birds may never be perfect. As long as I am seeing forward progress and improvement I am pleased.

Your crazy, your birds are nicer than most, put in the work and make them perfect. What are the faults that have you nervous? I know you been working on the tail angel but who isn't, other that that whats got you stressed?
