International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Great .it is nice to work with half sibling .from the same sire.

you have great plan for them .line breeding is the only way to maintain the purity of any strain .

which is your best BC cockerel or rooster from your flock ?

My best cockerel from my birds is a son of Maximus and Queen, full brother to the pullet I am showing. He has a lovely low tail and good top line so far like his dam. I will try to get some pictures of him this weekend. I am hoping to mate him back to Queen, that's the plan.

I may also mate him to Sheraz also. Sheraz is his grand mother.

Maximus and Queen son .nice to hear they managed to throw a good son .
mate him to his grand Dam Shiraz to reinforce the traits you are working on . mix the old and the young to maintain the balance .

between Shiraz and Queen ,which one is a better hen? mate him to the best one if you can . the most complete hen .

love to see his photos

Ok, here's my best birchen cock, JacksonView attachment 1528100 View attachment 1528102 View attachment 1528104 notice he has slight yellow on the part of his wings where the black copper variety has autosomal red. Autosomal red is a separate Gene from the genes that make their hackles and saddles silver, so it's a bit trickier. Here's a different cock bird, named Handsome. View attachment 1528106 he has some bleed through on his wings to where you can see the red, but he stays because he's one of the best from my first green fire batch last spring. View attachment 1528109Next I'll post a cockerel that I'll probably call for the red leakage in the wings View attachment 1528111This guy is hatched during my last hatch of the year in June. He has a lot of bleed through in his wings already so he will be culled when he's big enough.

love the first cockerel .the silver on his hackle and saddle is almost pure .Bravo
the little yellow on the wing will go away after few generation of selective breeding .

the genes responsible of the hackle and saddle coloration are the Sex Linked genes the Copper s+
the genes responsible for the shoulder coloration ,Ears tuft and the chest marking are Autossomal genes { carried by both birds male and female }.

if you want to speed up the process to get ready of the yellow shoulder .need to find a pure Silver cuckoo hen .she ll be great help .

Promising young pullet. Hopefully her tail set is nice and low when she's all grown up. Everyone's tails looked low this evening though. They must be depressed with all the rain again.

My project for this year was moving my flock from one location to another. Yay! Move achieved! My current dilemma is eliminating the autosomal red from the shoulders of all future cocks, which is proving difficult as one cannot see it in female wing patterns, so I'm wondering if the hens can carry autosomal red to their sons. It crops up in a good half of my cockerels, whom then March to dinner. At least it makes culling a bit easier to sort.

yes the hens carries the Autossomal genes as well . this group of genes are carried equally by both hen ans Rooster . both will pass them down to there progeny .

problem with a hen ,we can t see the the shoulder coloration but it is there . Select hens with a silver white Ears tufts . that will help. the hens carries the gens but she does not express them .

for the shoulder to be pure silver ,both hen and Rooster has to have all the Autossomal red genes turned to Autossomal White .
we still don t know yet how many genes are involved . is one gene or a group of gene s

I prefer Queen over Sheraz mainly because Queen lays a darker egg. Sheraz's egg is more dark speckled where Queen's egg is uniformly one solid color all over. Queen's egg is not speckled. Sheraz has more mass than Queen though and is a HUGE hen (the biggest hen I own) so she is definitely useful.

Here is a pic of Queen. She is one of my favorite hens. She has copper on her hackles, its just hard to see in the pic.

I had clinical for school today and it was a very long day, plus it has rained all day so I will do my best to get a pic of Queen's son ASAP.

from the photos .Shiraz is a better looking and correct hen .
Queen =Dark eggs
Shiraz = Type and mass

work with them both with a cockerel to capture both traits .
Shiraz will help you better to breed for the Show if bred back to her grand son .you saying he is correct .you want to capture that is this line .

mate him to both and work with they progeny as half sibling /cousin line . the best cockerel from Queen X Son will cover the best pullets from Shiraz X grand son and verse versa . you end up with a pure inbred line with many great traits.

I have been doing a lot of study when I was in Europe last 4 months and I learn body type and mass are the first to be bred true . you can not breed any other trait properly if the bird has a wrong body type or lucking mass .
body type and body carriage plus mass they make up 70 point in a total of the score card .
