International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here are a few eggs I got from Duke's pen yesterday.. his girls are finally laying well and their color isn't too shabby. These are from 4 different pullets and the color is getting darker. These pullets haven't been laying long.

Thank you! I'm really glad you like him. I was thinking about breeding him back to his dam (Queen). I will raise a few chicks from Duke and Queen first this spring and then clean Queen out a little later in the year and put her with the cockerel.

Ah you thinking of back cross to his dam .
refresh my mind ,what are the strongest and weakest post of Queen ?
does she have a great comb like him ?
what is the similarity between him and his Dam .
his two weakest post { Dark shoulder and high tail }are from Queen his Dam or his Sire .

when we do back cross ,we are going to reinforce the good and the bad . I trying to make sure the gorgeous head of the cockerel be lost .

will be nice if you can mate him to a over coloured hen with a lovely tail angle . he ll fix the head ,the tail shape and form . she ll fix the body colour on the cockerels and the tail angle .
balancing the mating .

@kfelton0002

stunning egg you have there .my favourite type of all the marans eggs .
what the name of the hen who laid it ? are you breeding from her this season ?

in France marans eggs competition . when 2 eggs are #9 the dotted one win ever time . you have to breed that trait true .

you really have very interesting marans flock ,many great trait to work with .All the best .

Do you have any recent pictures of duke? I'm anxious to see how he turns out.

Queen has a nice copper color to her hackles and throws males with rich dark copper, her tail angle is also good and her comb is decent. She is the only female relative to the cockerel from my line I have as an option to mate the cockerel to unless I do a brother/sister mating or brother and half sister. Sheraz is his grandmother, but her comb is twisted and she likes to throw twisted combed offspring. Even some of this generation (the cockerel's full siblings) has thrown her twisted comb genes even though neither of the parents had twisted combs.

When I get a free moment I will look through my pullets free ranging and see if I can find one that would go well with the cockerel. All of the pullets I have free ranging are his full sisters or half sisters, except for the Mashburn x Sheraz pullets and those are not great quality. They are overmelanized and small birds. Layers only.

I'll try to take some. He's got the halo thing going on but his type and topline is nicer than any male I've ever had. I'm excited to hatch some chicks from him in a couple weeks. Time drags when you are anxiously anticipating a hatch. lol

Thank you! I am very happy with their eggs this year. I need to go through them and figure out who is laying what. Just haven't had much time as sad as that is. I may pen them all together and just cover them with Duke and pick and choose which eggs I set for the time being.
