International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I wanted to share this culling cockerel with you. He demonstrates very clearly how the autosomal red/silver and the birchen/black copper are separate! He's got very clear silver hackles and saddles and a very red shoulder with no silver on his shoulder!!

he's got a lot going on but he definitely shows that there are more than one Gene controlling red and silver expression! Talk about copper bleed through! Lol. Most of my other cockerels are thankfully much better colored than him, but I wanted to share.

yes there is more than one gene controlling the red /silver colour .
2 type of genes .one type is controlled by sex linked genes .Silver S or Golden s+ is responsible for the hackle and saddle/ lancet colour for the rooster and hackle marking for the hen.
the other type of genes colour are Autossome . both rooster and hen have a equal amount . those genes are responsible for the shoulder .and chest marking of the rooster , and chest marking { Salmon marans } or hole body { Wheaten }

so those 2 different genes Sex linked S or s+ and Autossome Red or Silver are not related .could be separately .

Some breed have a Silver as Sex linked gene and Autossomal Red .
Birchem marans Silver Black has a Silver Sex linked and Autossomal Silver { White}.

selective breeding will get you the bird with a correct genetype .

I’ve got a splash cooper marans chick with a webbed toe on one foot and a fused toe on the other. Gets around and runs around fine, 3 days old.

My vet said she would separate it for me, but I’m wondering if there’s a need if it is getting around fine?

All other chicks hatched fine. Reputable breeder stock. Would you use any of the chicks that are from the pen as this webbed toe chick for any sort of breeders? I was wanting to make my own olive Eggers, nothing for commercial value, but I want to have healthy birds. Would not use the one with the webbed and fused toes.

I tried to get pictures of the black Copper chicks. Only two of them. I will try and hatch some more later in the season.

they are lovely .but they do have too much white .need to hatch more of them to be safe in the future .2 not enough to select from ,need around 15 chicks to be able to find the BC cockerel you are looking for .

good luck .keep hatching

yes it is safer to use the other chicks if they do not have any deformity .

let the vet split the toes please .good for him/her when fully mature . they used the feet {toes } to scratch .
