International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

This is the Splash Copper cockerel. This is the best picture I could get of him.

@marchick,

I’ve never seen that color in a Splash Copper. Very unique specimen! If you have the space you may consider letting him mature to see how he turns out. I like what I see at this age.

Best,
Keith
I think I will hold on to them. It depends on how many more hatch. I definitely am not keeping the over colored Blue Copper cockerel and the Black Copper pullet she is mossy. Decisions are not easy! I don't want to regret getting rid of a nice bird.

Quick Q: I purchased Black CM and Blue CM this spring. The Blues seem so different in color. Here are pics of the two blue chicks at 3 weeks. They are 5 week tomorrow, and the lighter colored chick in these pics is getting maybe "splash" coloring. I'll try to get more recent pics in the next few days. Comment on the blue coloring?

Hello @Acre4Me,

First, the blue coloring does not breed true. Blue is simply a dilution of black and can range from very dark to very light and all shades in between depending on how your breeding pens are setup. Breeders who prefer a darker blue will typically breed a BCM Cock to a BLCM Hen. This pairing will produce 50% BCM and 50% BLCM with the majority of the BLCMs being a darker blue. A BLCM Cock and BLCM Hen will produce 50% BLCM, 25% BCM and 25% SplashCM with the BLCM typically being a medium to lighter shade of blue.

Now for your chicks, the darker one is a BLCM with a nice dark blue (my preference) and the lighter one is actually a SplashCM with a faint blue tint. Blue Black Splash (BBS) Marans that hatch with predominantly yellow hatch down are Splash.

Best,
Keith

Ah! Thanks! First time with any blues and Maran, so I thought the color was so different! Good to know it is a range and more about them. Next step:determine M/F!
