International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man - Love the Columbian Pullet she is gorgeous! Tyson is built like a tank.

agree with you .the columbian pullets is my super star . named her Princess . took 2 people and 4 years of selective breeding to make her . ,all what we did me and my friend was worth it .now we have a pure columbian marans not a cross with any other breed of chooks like the sussex .
we worked out the formula now .
Love how tyson is build it is a reason I call his Mike Tyson .

can t wait to see the colour of the eggs .

@Chooks man - Your Pullets have really nice type...quality birds. What is your plan for breeding the Recessive White Pullet? Keith

I have a big plans for those white marans .
I m going to blend the recessive white ,the dominant white and the solid black together to make a pure solid white marans .never existed before . the genome of those white marans is going to be =E/E .S/S,I/I ,c+/c+. Pti+/Pti+.Id/Id. in English Extended Black ,pure silver. white dominant and Recessive , Feathered shanks and white pinkish legs . pure orange eyes .
those white marans when I finish working with them ,they could be cross to any other varieties and they will throw 100% .
Pure white chooks NOT just a white plumage .
a lot crosses are going to be made .long way to go .

that my focus this time .the solid black and solid white varieties plus the columbian . the rest I m going to work with in a small numbers .

My Solid Black lay the best dark egg. I have 3 black cockerels brothers .
my dominant white are good too .
the recessive white do have correct body type but not a best eggs very light .

Interesting! I didn't know that!
I think a lot of people don't know and think the whole state is rainy like Seattle. If it where not for the irrigation system. It would be all sagebrush and tumbleweeds. We have a lot of farmland, hops, apples, wine grapes and such. Humidity outside today is 22%. I add water when incubating but cover most of my tray with foil. I try and stay between 30% & 35% humidity.

@Chooksman - So the primary purpose of the Black cross will be to enhance / reinforce the dark egg genes and introduce the genes for pink undertones in the legs? I’m intrigued by this project and am still learning the breeding genetics. Keith

Well, I witnessed a behavior today that I haven’t seen before. I was hanging out in the grow out coop with my 6-7 week old BCMs to observe them for a while when one of the cockerels mounted a pullet. I have never seen that behavior in young chicks. Kids, they wanna grow up so fast these days! Anyone else seen this behavior in such young chicks.

no my friend haven t seen this behavior . what I have experienced is cockerels crowing at 11 days and another one at 13 days .those 2 cockerels end up with super large combs ,both .

here my story Keith .
1}I have a solid black chooks E/E copper based . they have a correct body type and they lay the darkest eggs for the moment . you know the Extended Black { solid Black }is the dominant variety.my black have a parasitic white .

2} I have a dominant white chooks . Sire coq and his daughters . the are ER/ER copper and silver based . they have a lot Black feathers . great type and lay a good #5 and #6 coloured eggs . those they never be pure white and they will always exhibit the yellow hackle on the cockerels .

3} I have a recessive white . Wheaten based . pure white and pinkish/white legs . egg colour #3 pinkish type . great body type and correct comb .

all those 3 type of chooks are not complete ,need some work to get them to the purity state .
to solve this problem I need to blend all those 3 variety fix they problem and come up with a solid black and a solid white marans .

@Chooks man - I thought it was definitely odd behavior for sure. I’m gonna watch his development closely - he may turn out to be an overly agrressive mating Coq. A few years ago I had a chick start crowing around 2 weeks old - he developed a large comb too. That’s strange - makes me wonder if there is a gentically anomaly at work with the early crowers. @Chooks man - OK, that all makes sense. This is going to an exciting project for you (and us)! Keith
