If I were to bet, I would say his mom is Malika. They have very similar body types. I think the copper will improve as they age. My line is notorious for taking a while to color up. Prince took around a year to color up to his full potential.

I can get more photos when I'm off work again. I snapped these pics today in a hurry because my life is chaos lately. This was taken after feeding time so he was more relaxed. I'm glad you think he would make a good breeder so far pending further evaluation. He appears to be my favorite as well. He is still an underdog and not very sure of himself yet. Not crowing so the way he carries himself may change as he reaches maturity.
that what you need to breed the agressivity out .
pen him with a layer and take as many photos of his as you can we you free ,he is worthy of looking at him . the best far Im concerne .

you produced lovely marans . even when you are busy . love to see what you can do if you have more time free . just chooks .you are born to do this my friend .BRAVO .

It's difficult to speculate on the dams of the cockerels because I group mated this year. A mistake I won't be making again with the Marans. What's done is done. Just have to make my selections and move forward. Even if I select down to 2-3 single mated pairs, that sits very well with me.

I think Duke is best suited mated to Queen so that will be a singled mated pen next year. I would love to put one of Duke's cockerels over Malika, then mate offspring from those two matings together in the future.

I want the cockerels to be mature enough to truly be able to see them before I cull. That's why I've held onto them so long. They're getting there, but they are driving my husband crazy. If you can see definite culls, let me know so I can take them out of the running. I don't really need to keep more than 2-3.
I will do that this evening .I know the keeper #1 is one of them don t need many

#1 Malika is good much .

Thank you! I appreciate you saying that. It makes me feel a fraction better since I have had a rather rough day (last two weeks, actually) unrelated to chickens. It's nice to get back to old friends that occupy my mind in a therapeutic way. Being with the chickens is therapeutic also.

Aggression does seem to crop up in my line of birds from time to time, but none of the cockerels from HM's cock bird have even remotely demonstrated aggression. Duke (their sire) is a rather docile bird and very soft-spoken and laid back. I hope they take their temperament from him.
