International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Would you worry #1 and Malika would produce overcolored birds since they are both well colored?
if you are going to single mate .regarless about the Dam origine than every thing go ,few chicks from many pairs better than many chicks from a same pen .

Don t breed the next season Do like me .spend one full season to make all the possible best combination . grow then up ,cull hard and keep few sublime one .
hyear after start your lines breeding program with bird you rally know from inside out .
minimum chicks hiigh quality . less feed and less space . only pen full of goegeous birds .

Malika and #1 will produce better plumage type .that what I m after in this mating plus the quality of the copper .plus the dissapearence of the Hallo.

Harvey's birds throw over colored cockerels. I only hatched 12 and 6 where keepers. The one BC pullet I probably won't use as a breeder. The other cockerels where way over colored. I culled them pretty early. 4 BLC, one BC all cockerels and one pullet that was very mossy. Over Colored males will probably show up in my breeders also.

Thank you! I appreciate you saying that. It makes me feel a fraction better since I have had a rather rough day (last two weeks, actually) unrelated to chickens. It's nice to get back to old friends that occupy my mind in a therapeutic way. Being with the chickens is therapeutic also.

Aggression does seem to crop up in my line of birds from time to time, but none of the cockerels from HM's cock bird have even remotely demonstrated aggression. Duke (their sire) is a rather docile bird and very soft-spoken and laid back. I hope they take their temperament from him.

they will inherit that quality .

it is easier to take some thing out than adding it ,specialy if you don t have it ,
over coloured chooks should be matted to a dark hens .

At the time I was really needing a BC. I culled over colored early because I didn't need a BLC. I kept the one because I seen something in him. I just always liked him. He was better than the BC to me. I kept comparing them. He did end up nice. Now I know to listen to my gut instinct. I think this will get easier as I learn my birds. How they are and what to look for in my line.

I have already culled 2 or 3 over colored cockerels with too much leakage and shafting. They had higher set tails as well. I figured Duke x Malika and Xena would produce some overcolored birds when I penned them up. Queen produces cockerels with a deeper copper and she tends to balance out the halo.

Mine where over colored with shafting also. So it runs in Harvey's line also. Hope that helps.
