International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My whites had high tails and yellow. High tails I could of worked with. I decided to cull one variety to work with my Coppers better. So whites went bye bye. I am a little sad about it but glad I did it. White pullets I kept for layers. Coppers have always been my favorite. They always will be.

happy for you .
keep the body colour you like as breeeders ,but work with your favorite varity .that will give you a better sesult and satisfaction in a long run ,when you see your line start to take shape and breed true .
it is the most enjoyable thing to experience when breeding chooks ,

Method to breed Malika with your 3 cockerels .that will give you 3 relatted but different progeny to work with .they will carries few faults as F1 progeny but they will fix each other out in they F1 and F3 generation .

well balanced progeny produced from one hen and 3 cockerels .

this way of breeding give better chicks quality ,not a great number but high quality .
pen breeding will give great number of chicks of lesser quality and inserten origine .

the hen can tell us a lot .
eggs colour .
eggs size ,shape and sheen
body type .
laying abalities
type of plumage
type of copper and quantities . hen without hackle will never produce a well colored cockerel

Do a same thing with Perfect the hackle BC pullet .

hen plus pullets and 3 cockerel .seem a correct breeding program .not a million chooks .just few small perfect pens .

@kfelton0002
Malika is stunning .complete bird
Agree with you cockerel #2 is her son
20191105_161439-jpg.1952460

he look s exaclty like her .trimed ,sleek ,best body shape and plumage .

so now we know Malika can produce a perfect marans .she luck the copper quatity . we need to find a best much for her. recording to her genetic make up .
she is senssitive to a split hackle marking .so the cockerel has to have a perfect copper .and not relatted to her .#4 dark ey is the best mach .eye it easy to spot and to cull early .

they will throw great progeny to balance out what will come from Queen{ GDam X Duke s }. body pattern will still need work but not the copper quality .comb will be great .body type and plumage great. just watch for the eyes .only select the orange eyes . easier than dealing with SW . My personle opinion .

don t loose the copper quality in your flock .
Duke is solving a problem but he is adding his own problem ,hard to deal with .

I agree that the brown eyes would be easier to correct as opposed to breeding more recessive genes (split wing) further into the line. Thank you for all your recommendations. SW will be culled. That helps me out a ton to be able to cull a few! :D

I'm not fond of the cockerel with the high tail (3rd photo). I hadn't planned on keeping him. I figured his tail would be a step in the opposite direction.

What hackle marking would I be looking for? Good copper on the pullets, or the black penciling (flame) in the hackles of the cockerels?

that what I was not sure about .
love his body pattern .
do any of the cockerels much his body pattern ,he seen to have a most complete shoulder colouring ,you will need that in the future ,
make sure how high is his tail and if he is replacable .body colour wise/

LOL I do hate that I will have to say goodbye to SW. He is a well-behaved cockerel and is lovely to look at (aside from the SW). I will have to walk away when hubby does the deed. Such is life raising chickens. I am glad brown eyes gets to stay though. :)
