International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I am still scare to do that! Maybe I would get rid of a real nice one. I hold on to them way too long. Unless they are mossy or way over colored really early.
@10 week I only select for body type ,eyes colour .leg feathering ,early feathering type .comb form .
I do not select for body colour and pattern tell after 4/5 months old .
last select will be after they are mature ,pullets laying and cockerel fully coloured .

4 stages of selection .
1 @hatch . hatchdown colour and body type .
2 @ 10 weeks ,body type and etc.........
3@ 4/5 month .body pattern .
4 @ adult stage .

Does it bother you guys to sell to people that are chick peddlers? I have a problem with that. Big problem with that! No love of the breed just want to raise and sell chicks. Get a good line for cheap. It's a no go for me!

any body who want to get cheap chooks will not come to see me .I m very expenssive .need great effort to uy expenssive chooks from me .
I m very selective to who i ll be selling my chooks .I give free too .to the people I know they are good with chooks ,and they put effort but they can t affort it .I don t mind helpping them .

Same! I have actually cut way back on selling anything to people I dont know. I sold 2 white legbar cockerels and I am about to sell an old english game pair but for the most part I give more birds away than I sell. I give a lot of my older Marans hens to a lady at work a few weeks ago.

the fight all the time .does not worry me .they are boys ,they figure out they way of doing things .
I know one thing for sure .cockerels do no like to be along in seperate pen .they like friend .
I never mix the high ranking agressive rooster with a low ranking ones .too much dominance .

last week Tyson 2 and Blue Dimont fought for 2 days . was funny ,they fight ,take a break ,drink and a feed together rest and restart fighting . they where both dominant wont let go .now they are bodies now .

My Marans cockerels adore each other. I got tired of wading through them at feeding time so I put some in the 1/3 acre of fenced in game cocks on tie cords where the dogs are to keep them out from underfoot. The game cocks also keep them humble as well. All the cockerels stay right together and even snuggle up to one another to sleep. They squabble from time to time but nothing serious.

I have more space when I m not breeding the chooks ,because I group them in larger group . less work / plus I need the breeding area to be empty for a minmum of 4 month to desinfect and repaint the coops .regrow the grass ,fix the broken things in the runs before I start select the future breeders pullets next season to put them in those pens .

I m building a new runs /pens and 6 large hen houses for the young ones .the ara is 75 meters wide and 100 m large . a lot room in the future . will take me 2 months to get it done .

That sounds awesome! I wish I had more space for more coops/runs and grow out pens. I have to stick with breeding pens mostly instead but hubby makes them roomy enough to be comfortable for the birds.

How short do you cut the spurs and do they bleed a lot? Would a dremel work? Do you put anything on the spurs to disinfect?

We trim them down to about a 1/4 inch or so. A good rule of thumb is when you put the spur through the hole in the holder that the spur fits (3 different size holes) then cut the spur flush with the holder thats a good length. The spurs will bleed, yes. If you first notch a little above where you intend to saw first they wont bleed that much. You can use quik stop powder to control any bleeding. No we do not disinfect and have never had a problem and we trim a lot of spurs every year.
