International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

what do you get from birchen/dark cuckoo cross?

if the cockerel is dark cuckoo and the hen is Birchen you will get 50% each ,work like Blue over a Black 50/50
if the cockerel is a Birchen and the hens are cuckoos than all the cockerels will be dark cuckoos and all the pullets will be Birchen
Birchen and cuckoos work very well in breeding pen ,
Birchen will add the hackle to a cuckoos .

You know we love the pictures! It helps me to learn what to cull for early. It makes me want to hatch a few but I am waiting till march. The two youngest BC pullets should be about 9 months by then. I figure the 2 pullets where about 12 weeks old when I got them. That's just a guess. I think they where shipped to me last part of September. All I can do now is drool over yours and everyone else posting pictures. Please keep posting pictures it helps with the winter yuck.

I love seeing his pics too! I've learned so much from this thread. :)

I dont want to hatch before March either but hatching early yields bigger birds for fall/winter shows. I may have to suck it up and hatch a few in the winter. Lol

My two BC pullets are not old enough or I probably would be hatching in February. No that would make me hauling buckets of water up the slope with ice and snow. I think Chooksman said at least 9 months before hatching from them. I am getting the itch to hatch.

Not me! I'm enjoying my chick-free time. Lol. I will start hatching from the oldest pullets when they start laying. So far they arent laying yet.

No hauling buckets of water isnt fun in the cold and ice. You sure dont want to risk slipping and hurting yourself going up the slope in the winter.

So my Marans got skunked today in the double show. One of them placed 5th in the first show. One of the judges said they had good bodies and they were nice chickens, so it all boiled down to color. They chose the birds with the most color.. the more flashy birds. Apparently they like the lighter hackled birds. I'm still very proud of my birds and will keep on keeping on.

I didn't get completely skunked though. My OEG pullet got RV in the first show and BV in the second show.
