International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

He was narrow looking up until yestersay I swear it. He held his feathers tighter and ran from the other males free ranging before. His tail almost looked pinched together just the other day. I was surprised to see how different he looked in just a few days time. Lol

to have a best idea about the cockerels they need to be with a hens .relaxed and happy .

same thing happen to me this year with Day Walker .I always thought of his as a tall leggy and doesn t trust .but since I moved him with a hens .he is transformed into the best rooster I ever had .fill up nicely .stunning

We get real cold sometimes below 0 degrees. I put heat lights in this year. I am hoping to save my roosters from losing the tips of their combs. It probably won't help but have to try something. All my roosters last year got frostbite.

Our winter was very mild last year but the year before that was brutal on the combs. I fear this year will be a very cold winter as well, however there are way too many of them to put heat lamps on. Their combs will just be doomed.

That is fascinating! I have Prince penned very securely. Unless he keels over from natural causes he isnt going anywhere. :)

great to hear .
when you get @marchick cockerel s you will have 3 sire line going on .other wold .2 different and new Z chromozomes to add to your flock .

it is all about the Z chromozome when come to chooks .a problem is a hen does carry one coppy of Z . that what make complicated .

That is exactly what happened. He had less competition after we culled some cockerels and it made him feel like top dog. Lol

if they are not for showing than it is not a big problem .as long as you know what type of comb was befere they lost to the frost .

Awesome! Chicken genetics is fascinating. I look forward to getting a bird or birds from marchick to work with to improve the color in mine.

I have a Legbar cock bird free ranging but he doesn't pay much mind to the cockerels. Its the other cockerels that like to bully and fight. They are a rowdy bunch. The Game cockerels are the worst for bullying. I put my favorite Marans cockerels in the yard with the dogs and cock birds on leg hitches and they matured faster. I will continue to do that in the future as it worked out quite well. I wish I had the facilities to break them up into several smaller groups like you do.

It just occurred to me that recently we have been penning up all the older Game cockerels free ranging as they have been fighting. That is why Big Boy feels more sure of himself now.. the mean Games he was afraid of are no longer competition.

I missed this cockerel when culling/photographing. He will be culled this weekend unless you see some reason he should stay. A lot of their tails look shabby because despite my efforts they choose to roost in stupid places instead of the hen house.
