International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Chooks Man. I would not have any of these beautiful birds, if not for this thread. Thank you Red Banks for starting this thread and all of you that are still here. Might not be any pics for awhile Holidays and it is only 25 today with a 30 mile an hour wind! Mostly we just try to stay alive until spring. -15 degrees coming soon.TOM

see you in the spring my friend . let them grow more .
we all love our marans and we are trying to breed them well without getting into conflict . just sharing our experiences that all .

Oh my goodness! Keep them warm buddy, -15 sounds miserable. We had quite a bit of wind today as well, but it was mild and not cold. I couldn't take any pictures today either due to the wind. Spring will hopefully be here before we know it and we'll all be up to our eyeballs in little fuzzy Marans chicks!

sound great .
let the pullets mature and see if the white feathers are still there .
Dark eyes pullets will be only mated to DH

That's what I had planned on, but I'm not going to put my cart before my horse. I'm going to let them get to point of lay before I decide if they'll work out as breeders or not. Birds tend to change so much as they mature, so I will wait them out. For now, I'm just penning them up to keep them safe. There has been a rogue dog roaming around and chasing chickens, so until he is done away with I can't take any chances.

my first broody hen of this season has 14 eggs from DW pen .checked them all good .due this Sunday .
2 more hens a week later .all DW eggs
2 more hens haven t giving them any eggs yet .I will give them some the incubator when I do the transfer to the hatcher .

Sounds like a good plan, let those hens do all the work. Hope you have good hatches!

keep them safe .
they change every week . POL is a good time to select pullets for type and other stuff { tail /comb etc.......} .after they lay 20/30 eggs is a good time to select the future breeders ,@ 9 moths penning those selected pullets breeders with a cockerel .@ 10 moths start collecting /incubating they eggs .@ 11 months/12 you should have they progeny /
year in year out .same program .

Yeah I'm in no hurry for them. Going to focus mainly on backcrossing first and foremost to preserve egg color. Then I can do brother/sister matings once the pullets prove themselves worthy as breeders.

great plan . good luck with them .
backcrossing is a one step forward into your breeding program . mixing the old /medium and the young . all in one .
