International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

my friend . the chooks don t care if they are vaccinated or not ,they don t care if they get commercial or home made feed .as long as they have a lot space ,a lot feed and dry shelter . safe from preditor . I have seen chooks eat dead rat ,dead chicken any thing they can get they beak into .
all what we are dealing with is human culture . vaccine .showing .SOP .and all the other stuff .chooks do no care about our believes .
chooks leave in the forest .they eat grass ,bugs ,worms ,nuts and what ever they can find .they do not have culture .they are free creature .

your chicks formula is good ,you need to add boiled eggs ,and some Vitamin .. you don t need commercial . my mom and grand mom had chooks . they never bought feed .only grains .they used mix they own formula . chicks ,/pullet or layer . dry bread soaked in milk for the cockerels .

Sorry I had to laugh at that one. It’s sounds like something my Portuguese father in law would try to tell me.
His best line was “my mother use to give them all the tables scraps and bread”
I tell him that chickens have evolved since then. 😂

chicken did not evolve .peoples become snobby and think they know every thing .
we did not breed chooks .peoples before us bred all those chooks . we inherited them ,we did not breed them .
this days we have smart phones ,but that does not mean we are smarter .
we read a lot and we think we know .peoples before us they used know a lot by experience and observation . they where not less competent them us .

how do you know?
are you a commercial chooks feed producer?
they all cut corner .they are human .
I will trust some one I know to make me my feed not a industrial unkown person .

To answer your first question in the USA i am guessing that the cheaper feed for chickens may meet minimum requirements.
It is like anything else the more you pay the more you get. I would not expect the highest quality feed for the cheapest price I can buy.
Also a local mill here supplies a university with there chicken feed. This is a major agricultural university. So to me if it’s good enough for them it is good enough for me.
Luckily yes some may try to cut corners but the reputable companies have far to much to lose if they tried to play games.

I was being sarcastic when I said chickens have evolved. But in reality they have over many many years. Table scraps and bread is not a “complete feed”. That “meal plan” is just plain old being a cheap ***. Also not likely to be someone that looks after them either.

I never said .table sable scrap and bread is a complete feed .
what I said is peoples before us had chooks and they had no commercial feed ,but in some how they manage to formulate they own feed to soot they chooks they where raising .

in France even now ,if you want to raise { Label rouge} Red Label chooks ,you have to feed them home made formula from the grain growing in your farm ,no commercial feed . those formula been passed down from generation to generation since a long time .

when I said mon and grand mom .I don t mean like other peoples just as a old way .What I mean is .both of them where chooks breeders .of many breeds .of chicken .ducks .turkey and guess . those 2 laddies where serious about what they where doing . and they knew what they where doing too . they where not feeding they chooks kitchen scrap .I can tell you that .

That I agree with some people care and some don’t.

I feed a local feed mill layer mash supplemented with table scraps and sea kelp, grit, and oyster. They get to free range more during their off season when I'm not keeping them grouped for breeding, so once summer comes they get free range during the day. I can rotate who gets out, though, so they can get some free ranging during breeding season.
