International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

SO SAD,
I Processed my # 1 cock last fall all so meaner than HELL, he threw some really nice chics. Got a nice cock out of him Arthur II he is not quite as mean, I have not ate him, yet! Hope to take him back over his daughters next spring. Arthur dressed out at 5.7lbs and ate just fine. Most of my cockerels dress out at 3.4-3.6 lbs. All ways meat in the freezer. I have alot of cockerels to choose from again this fall, probably Oct,Nov.
How many cockerels do you have? It took me forever to do the five. I have two pens full! Ugh! I usually don't let myself get so attached to the chickens anymore. I had to say these are for eating and not pets. I have to admit. I know he was mean but I cried over Blaze. My husband was happy though.

This is the only other BC cockerel in that pen. Other than Ace and Black Jack. He is younger and hardly has a comb. So those pictures are of the same rooster. Must be position and lighting.

Remember I have a processor down the road. They do all my birds at $3 each, shrink wrapped and ready for the freezer. Down the road I get my feed at $0.16 a LB. YES I am bragging. TOM

Here’s some random photos of my two BC hens
These 2 pics are of hen with white tips in feathersView attachment 2305617View attachment 2305618these next pics are of my hen DarcieView attachment 2305619View attachment 2305620View attachment 2305626sadly I’m thinking I’m not going to improve much with what I have. I don’t think I should use the one with white tips should I?

those hens look to me they come from a same hatch as your cockerels .hatch mates ?
they have a same body type and same traits .
those chooks can not be bred together .they will produce chooks like them selves .no good .

I like a hens more then a cockerel .

Heh tom you can't find poultry processors here for less than lots of 500.... So I just do my own. I'm getting better! My sister on the other hand, raises organic meat birds for Tyson and that's so completely different from what us breeders do, it's crazy! 30,000 chicks per barn, 8 weeks to finish! Could you imagine having a 5 lb bird at 8 weeks old? And the processors come to her place to load up the whole barn at a time, all in all out. It's so different from my teeny operation! She's never seen the parents, I'm on year 7 with the same flock!
