International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Umm yes I guess? They all came from the same breeder but I purchased twice about a year apart.

do you know if your breeders is using line breeding or out crossing ?
it is very important to you to know the parentage of your flock other wise you will run into early inbreeding in your flock .

👍🏻 I can try to get more photos but he doesn’t like picture day very much lol.

if you want me to help you breeding good marans .you need to provide me with photos of your chooks .lot of them from all angles .other wise I will never know how exactly your chooks look like .
I take 100 or more photos of my flock every week .been doing it for 7 years .all in my photos album .does help in breeding .

very nice .now you know you marans have a dark egg genes plus they have a full body pattern and correct copper plus correct body type ,
i know they have few faults but for the moment you have a foundation traits to build your future line around .
I m very happy for you ,good start .work need to be done but the fun part .build your own line . it is rewarding when done properly .

Khabib and his girls .
I m going to talk to you guys about the method I m using to breed Khabib . { Khabib proven to pass dark eggs genes ,gorgeous combs and stunning tails to his progeny .they back is little short like him .
I m using Proven Sire Pen Breeding Method { PSPBM } =
Year 1 =
1= this breeding method the sire has to be proven breeder .the result of his progeny has to be recorded and proven to be good .
2 = the hens they don t have to be proven ,just select for they body type and they have to be good in the traits that rooster luck { in my case with Khabib ,his back is little shorter ,all the hens have a long back } .
3 = we don t have to know who is laying what .we select only the best eggs to incubate . color and shape { please don t forget the shape of marans eggs .lot breeders breed for color but they dismiss the shape ,bad practice }.
4 = we hatch minimum of 25 chicks .
5 = when fully grown ,we select the best 4 to 8 best pullets and 2 best cockerels .we select pullets without they sire faults .

year 2 =
6 = we pen the best selected a year old pullets to they Sire { for me Khabib } .this selected pullets should not have a same fault as they sire { very very important other wise this method will not work } no cutting corner to please a self .
7= we pen the best selected cockerel to a same last year hens { his dam and the others } .
8 = we hatch around 20 to 25 chicks from each pen . we do a same thing we did last year selecting the best pullets and cockerels from both pens . progeny pen 1 and pen 2 /

year 3 =
9 = pen Khabib = we remove him and keep the hens .we will bring in his grand son from pen 2 { hens pens } .
hens pen = we remove the bad performing hens and we replace them with they daughters . we will bring in cockerels from sire pen 1 .
10 = now we have extra well bred pullets from the sire pen .we can keep them a side till they get older or we can sale them as foundation line to some one else so they start thet line .

every year we ll be replacing the bad chooks with they best progeny .we will breed out the faults and reinforce the qualities .
if you start with a good genetic diversity ,you don t need to bring in any new blood .

hope this information will help .

Thank you, it is fun now the only part i need to work on is being patient :barnie
Now that I stop and think about it, it won’t be until fall when I will see some chick grow outs.

Now that I stop and think about it, it won’t be until fall when I will see some chick grow outs.

it is better to be patient than rush thing up and run into bad trouble in the future .
nature does not carry about how we feel . nature does the best in designing thing to last .we have to learn to let it express it self .
you are about to start the foundation of your line ,so give it all the help does need to be good one .
for me I waited more than a year for all my flock to mature .I tell you it is the best thing I ever done .now I have the best breeders flock .all mature and all well selected by the nature and by my self too . no point of breeding the weak and the unhealthy .

foundation is more important ,you can t re- do it . has to be strong .

it is too much mess out there many people are buying fertile egg from a same person , hatch them and pairing the sibling thinking they have they own line .not true .does not work like that .

if fertile eggs come from a same breeders ,than they should be marked .witch hen they come from ,and what pen .

She currently has 25 hens with 4 roosters in 3 different breeding pens. I will ask her what breeding method she uses.

This is my chosen cockerel.
Not much of a choice since i only have 2 and the other guy turned real mean.

My experience is, if they are over friendly as chicks, they turn mean as juveniles and adults.
Just my observation.

I have named this guy Waylon.
He is 7 months old this week.
Line #2.
I do hope he fills out a bit.
Tail, comb need work.

I see no white on him.
Just mud. Its been raining for a couple of days.

These two pullets stand out to me.

One has complete copper hackle. She is a line #2 pullet.

The other has a beautiful small, low tail at all times and she is chunky and short. Her name is Georgia. She was the lone chick that hatched from shipped eggs. I just include her in line #2
