International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Up to 4 week age difference here to.
Moonshine dame, Jr sire.

Very tall, penguin coloring, combs appear early. I see many more cockerels from this pairing. But maybe it's just the early comb development.

They look like giraffes.

I am officially done breeding for the season. Hens are getting their much needed break.

Moving Lovesong and Moonshine chicks outside. Jr sire.

There are 24? I think.
Up to 4 week age difference between them.
Both hens produced very different chicks.

These are Lovesong dame, Jr sire:

I do like what I see . LoveSong chicks are all class, short legged , long body and early feathering type . Minimum white on them . Our cockerels will be from those guy for sure. Can t wait to see them fully grown.
Love your work

Wow there is a big difference between them . Those are really tall with X type legs . If we are going to keep anything from this group than we only keep pullets not cockerels for sure.
@Punkybrewster do you see the benefit of knowing the Dam / Sire rather than just a Sire . Now we can tell witch is a better producer hen / hens
Let them do more growing than we go over them to select .
If you keep doing this type of breeding pairs and trios , you will fix all the traits in no time my friend.
Great job

I do see the importance of knowing dame/sire now.
What a difference!

I ended up culling all cockerels except the 2 that were chosen a couple of weeks ago. The third that was younger we wanted to let grow, his tail popped up high and he began to just look skinny with no mass.

I am not happy with the 2 we are keeping either. Their copper on their hackles is not rich and they have a ton of white underfluff. I will get updated photos tomorrow. Pretty sure I see the beginning of a halo too. I will let them grow some more.

We have better cockerels to grow out I hope from Lovesong. Some of the cockerels we have been culling are hers. She was in the cockerel pen this spring.

do no cull the last 2 cockerels we selected ,I know you are not happy about them ,we have to let them grow so we can see exactly what genes they are carrying .
hope we get some good cockerels from LS .
let see how MS son s will turn up when they are a little older . it is too early to select now I know they look taller but whey can change so much as they grow .
breeding is not a simple ,other wise every body will have great looking chooks by now .
we have to have plain and we need to stick to it ,

@Punkybrewster in this photo from MS chicks I can see 2 type of chicks ,tall with sllow feathering type ( far back ) and long with a early feathering type front chicks and middle chicks ,
can you check if the early feathering type are pullets /sllow feathering type are cockerels ? if it a casse than JR is a early feathering type genes carriers and MS is a sllow feathering type gene carrier .
it is important for us to know .so we can make a better selection .

Agreed.
We stick to the plan :)

The more knowledge I gain from learning what my cockerels should look like, the worse they look to me.

I just remind myself that we are working on type.

It will all come together.
Thanks @Chooks man

I do believe the slow feathering chicks are cockerels but I will check tomorrow.

@Punkybrewster in this photo from MS chicks I can see the 2 chicks in front with a early feathering type and very long body low to the ground ,are you sure they are MS chicks ,because they look pullets to me and good one too .
we want to establish if MS is a pullets Dam or Cockerels Dam or she can throw both type ( very rare )
