International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

She's very pretty. Feel free to post more pics of her, so we can get a good look at her.
Here's my momma and her 6 babies (3 BCM and 3 OE). 2 wks old on Sunday.

She caught me on my back pant leg today, actually. Wasn't paying attention to how close I was to her babies.
I had a mean hen also! She was so aggressive but not as bad as my pheasant hen. She attacked every time I got near her eggs. She didn't even have chicks. They are adorable!

New to it. Only my second Broody tho. It's hard to feed and water, take pics, clean brooder pen. Figured out I can clean it when it gets close to dark and she's got them snuggled into nest.

They can get very protective of their babies. I usually just put the eggs in the incubator. To me it's better to let the hens do the work but then you need to have a broody. There usually isn't one when I need one. My second batch of eggs have been in the incubator a week now.

Hello Chooks Man. You saw pics of my pair of BCM cockerels a while back, and from what I've learned from you, I can see they have imperfections, but they have qualities I like.

One thing I like is that they are great foragers. Another is that they are very aware of their surroundings, and cautious.

Are these traits that would be passed on genetically when they cross with my low quality barred rock pullets?

I've noticed that one of my pullets seems to forage a lot better than the others, so I was thinking that her eggs, fertilized by one of the BCM cockerels might create a good mix for my backyard flock.

They free range most of the day, and would need to be able to evade predators. And also be able to forage enough that they wouldn't need as much commercial feed.

Thanks for all the information you've been sharing. I appreciate it!
