International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@BlueTheBrahma
it is rainning today so I have a time to do some internet work .
here the method to breed a new strain of Golden cuckoo marans from crossing a BCM to English Silver cuckoo ;
Year 1 :you have a trio of BCM french type ,you need to find English silver cuckoo marans trio .
first mating: pen the BCM rooster to the 2 Silver cuckoos hens = hatch F1 a DZ chicks from each hen . this F1 progeny will be all E/ER
all cockerels will be S/s+ . B/b+ dark split golden cuckoos ,
all the pullets will be s+/- BC .we keep the best few cockerels and few pullets ( dark eggs layer )
do a same thing with a ESC rooster mate him to the 2 BCM hens = hatch F1 DZ chicks from each hen. this progeny will be different all E/ER . all dark cuckoos .S/s+ .B/b+ for cuckerels and S/- B/- for pullets unpure silver cuckoos ( carriers of the Autossomal red genes ). select few nice cockerels and few nice dark eggs layer pullets.
this is end of year one ,

that is great ,you always had a problem with trouble maker rooster .nice to find one who is cool dude .
when you have time take few close up photos of his I want to check him out .maybe we can breed from him next year just for genetic diversity .

I will get pictures soon. I put in a few more Marans eggs. I think the heat is affecting fertility though. My first batch of pheasant eggs most hatched. My second batch only 4 hatched. This time out of 11 pheasant eggs only 1 is showing life. They where all from the same pair of pheasants. So we will see how this batch of Marans eggs hatch.

yes the heat affect the fertility for sure .
that bad 1 out of 11 from a same pair , hope you will have better luck with marans eggs .

I got both chooks run gate framed .had to put some wooden post 4/4 easier for me to attach the doors to them tomorrow ,I have to build them first ,not a hard work . digging a 4 hole by hand 2 feets deep each was hard .is done any way.

Hey guys, not getting notifications for some reason again. We lost our Morty girl (midnight majesty marans) a couple days ago. She had flystrike and what I believe was lice. I'm kinda unsure. Been gutting the coops, shopvaccing them and then treating them with DE.
Anyway, King has gone lame and I need some insight on what it might be. Seems neurological or connected to the lice/mites.
He's bobbing his head and he's unbalanced. I've got a video (if I can figure out how to post it) where he crows and immediately stumbles. And the head bobbing is almost constant for unless he's concentrating but even then he seems to struggle to focus on what he's looking at. We're giving him a vitamin powder added to his water and have him isolated from everyone else but I'm not sure what to treat for. I'm seeing everything from Mareks to wryneck and all over what it could be.

I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. I’m really new and can’t offer any good advice but I did find a recent thread about posting videos. Hope it helps https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-post-videos.1588870/

sorry to hear that my friend .
for the lice and mite to kill the chooks it has to be infestation off biblical proportion . must be some thing else .
for King s it is very hard to tell , mareck will make him loose weight quikly. but wryneck he can stay healthy ( eat ,mate ,crow and all the other stuff just some time will go all funny . twesting a head al the time is a good sign it is some sort of wryneck ,does he go backword when he is shaking his head ?
do what you can it s not much else you can do .it sound like it s genetic deffect not a normal illness .

If he is crowing that is a good sign. Is his comb and wattles their normal color? Is he eating and drinking? Sometimes stressed birds don't eat and drink as much.

If he has lice he could be anemic. Maybe add some red meat or liver to his diet.

For something looking neurological, I have had luck giving 1/2 tablet of human B Complex Vitamins daily. It can take some time to work. I also gave that same Vitamin/Electrolyte powder for several days. This gets closer to a therapeutic amount of all the B vitamins. There is no real risk of giving too much of the B vitamins as they are water soluble and the body gets rid of excess. I think I gave it about 2 weeks. Doesn't always work but won't hurt him.

**If you decide to give this a try make sure to get B Complex NOT B12.***

Hope he improves.
