International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My marans are right at 8 weeks old today. It’s pretty clear that I kept 2 cockerels and 2 pullets. The copper color looks to be coming in as expected. Around the necks only on the girls and necks, back, and shoulders on the guys.

I’m still trying to decide what I want to do with them but I’m leaning toward breeding them all n with my flock of Easter Eggers, olive eggers, Wyandotte and Brahma. I think I can get some color egg layers of a good dual purpose size so the option of harvesting birds is there. I had dreams of breeding to sop but I’ve only been raising chickens since this spring so I feel I probably need to slow down and just dabble a little and get a feel for things before I spend and more money trying to set up a true breeding program.

very hard to tell .to know exactly if your marans rooster carry the yellow gene ,you need to be 100% the chicks are his . you have to pen him with your hens and hatch few eggs from each one to check for the yellow legs .
give a chicks a little more time and they will show all the traits to tell if they are pure or not .
love the colour of they eyes ,blue . that maean they will have bright orange eyes when fully mature .
hope they are pure

Thanks, didn’t know that about eye colour. Next year when I come to hatching they should be penned properly.

I start collecting some eggs to put in the incubator . I know I have just one rooster rashad with 35 hens but I m only collecting eggs from the hens I see them getting mountted by him ,he is doing good job busy boy for sure .
it is always good to know the type of eggs each of your chooks lay .
I just want to hatch some chicks that all ,other wise those eggs just get eaten .
here the variety and a name of the hens I m collecting eggs from ;
Blc - Measha , sister to Brahma . copper neck , Dark eye. Big mama sasha
Splash = kind
BC = Amor
Solid Black = Zenyatta
Blue tail buff = Blue moon
red pyle = babycorn

shame LoveSong and Dark angel are not laying .I have seen him matting with DA maybe she is going to star laying soon

Thanks, I’m glad to hear they have the correct body type. Part of me really wants to go back to the breeder and get another couple dozen hatching eggs he is only about a 30 minute drive away and he is selling them for $6/dozen. Black copper marans and light Brahma. I do have enough land and no laws that limit how many chickens I can have.

But the sensible side of me keeps saying I don’t have the structure to house them, building materials are expensive, and clearly there is not a market for them locally or the other guy would be charging a lot more for his eggs.

Hi. Could someone please tell me what the genotype is for the black copper marans color? And how likely/rare is it for them to lay speckled eggs?
BCM genotype is ER?ER ( Birchen family )
s+/ s+ copper color ( golden base )
Ar/Ar ( Autossomal red ) red shoulder and spotted chest as a birchen family is known for .
bl+/bl+ ( black plumage )
Pti 1/ Pti 1 ( kind of pinkish colored legs just a buttom part of the feet ,leg color are actualy slate }
there is more but those genes are the base

This pullet has been really hard to catch. She's a black silver, but she's got a lot of extra mottling going on. I've had mottling show up every once in a while, but this girl is really mottled, plus she's got the silver cape.
wow she is really prety . stunning combination of silver black and mottling .
let see how what color she will haver when fully mature .I like her a lot .I think your line is starting to mutate because is kept pure and in close cyrcle breeding .I m just guessing in here .
keep us up datted as she grow .
what you saying this pullet is not the first one to appear from your breeding program but she is the one with most mottling ?
I have to do soe reacherch my friend .
