International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I get a small bag of grass seed at a hardware store here. It is mostly winter rye grass like some people here plant so they have a green yard in winter. Golf courses use similar.

This grass is hardy all winter here but dies in the heat. I have a couple frames I plant in my birds run. They can't scratch up the roots but can nip at the green grass. Most will go to these first before eating their feed.

When I buy the seed I make sure it's not treated with any fungicides or pesticides.
that is very cool way to give them grass .
I notice that with my chooks the first thing they do when I let them out is going to green grass and start nipping the fresh shoot .

I got this one with lots of speckles yesterday. I didn't see who but I think the same pullet. It was in the same nest box as the other one.

The other eggs are from Cream Legbar and Wyandotte.

We get snow starting as early as now and lasting as late as April, or sometimes we don't. You never know how winter will act, but sometimes you get a shoulder season and sometimes you don't, but the only green is pine trees. Based on current weather trends I'm expecting snow maybe November this year?

We do not get very much snow. Most years none or only a trace. Rarely a northeastern will meet cold air and we will get 6-12 in. Usually all gone in 1-2 days. Road crews here do not maintain much equipment so only clear main roads. It shuts everything down. Nothing to do but play in the snow.

My chickens will not walk in the snow
I have to spread straw to get them out of the coop. Some have never seen snow. We laugh when new birds first see snow. They are a hoot! 🤭

I have had this grass stay green down to short periods of 20F. We only have short freezes. I would have to have time to get used to your winters. I've been here all my life.
