International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I hope Raven recovers for you. Wishing you good luck with her.
And I love the name Raven.
Thank you! I know she will never be in my breeding program. She is so small compared to the others but that doesn't affect her being my baby. I think she had cocci then got an infection. She had drainage from her vent. She never stopped eating though. She eats good. I had her on antibiotics but that didn't seem to clear it up. I started her on Prebiotics and that has helped a lot. She never acted sick.

I have some bad news. I lost the one rooster that was attacked by the turkey. So I am kind of lost on my future breeding program. I do have some young ones from the other rooster. First 3 pictures are the same cockerel #1. The 4th picture is cockerel #2 . The last 2 pictures cockerel #3. I do have a couple more younger BC cockerels.

I learned the lesson hard way: never keep turkeys (read: toms) with other animals.

You know how when you do something and it was really bad. I had this BC pullet that I missed a chick rubber band. I took them off of all of them but missed one. I had seen her hobbling but didn't catch her to check big mistake. I just thought she hurt her leg. After about a week I decided to catch her. The band was embedded I cut it out. I put her on antibiotics and doctored her. After she healed she had scar tissue and couldn't straighten her leg. I worked with her everyday. I put a splint to slowly straighten her leg and break up scar tissue. After about 2 1/2 months I figured she was about as good as she will get. She had a limp but was a lot better. That limp has almost gone away. She has developed white feathers on the injured leg. I feel so bad I caused that! Lesson learned! I am so happy about her recovery though. She is a pretty pullet but that may be I am biased from caring for her so long.

Turkeys can be downright nasty. I find that, if they all have enough space to get away from each other, they usually don't hurt each other. The turkeys have free range. It makes them a lot nicer and less likely to kill each other or any other birds. Turkeys need a lot more space than most folks think they do. A whole lot more, for the heritage ones. They practically need a pasture.
The broad breasted turkeys are weird, I dislike them because they are so fragile and can't really mate, they break bones just hopping a foot down, but the heritage ones will fly onto your roof, or the neighbor's roof. I still love my turkeys, though.
