International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Around here we go by the adage of SSS, shoot, shovel, and shush, it solves many a predator problem and prevents problems with neighbors.
Hence the gun by the back door.

It will not happen again.
I had to run upstairs and fumble getting it loaded.

It's just the 2 of us now so it can stay ready in the corner by the door.

I like them they are different style don t forget they where somebody cull .they are actualt nicer than most BC roosters we see every wher , they need to be used differently over different hens to get the best result out of them ,. but they all have very nice body type , they balance each other out . through them I can see the breeders was working on many different traits .

Yes.
They are only distantly related.
The way he toe punches, they all have different parents. This is a good thing.

Better photos of Greatsong and the lone pullet.

They are not the best and they both lack mass and her tail is a mess. I hope they fill out and improve with age.

Greatsong just needs to fill out. His tail is nice and short as long as it doesn't turn squirrely....

BUT they both came from very dark eggs.

I will breed her to the 3 nice cockerels and see how they turn out. IF she ever starts to lay.

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate these pictures! First time chicken owner, got seven day-old chicks including one BCM in late August and he just started crowing yesterday. We are a bit sad to not have the prospect of chocolate eggs, but man, he is already so beautiful!! Seeing your photos of what he might achieve is making me even more glad we are keeping him!

And if we end up needing to get some new pullets, a BCM is definitely in the cards!

Are you saying you've put more than 22 eggs in it?
Yes.
I have stacked on top of the original 22 in the turner.

The turner needs to be off and you need to hand turn.

By day 10, I am able to pull out the duds.

There was a time when I had a problem with fertility. Stacking them I was able to have a full incubator at lockdown after candling. I started with 30+ eggs and by lockdown only had 22.

But with good fertility and during the busy spring season, having them stacked and hand turning, I get large hatches. By lockdown, I have another incubator free and put 1/2 into it for hatching.

It's a nice system during that busy time with a ton of eggs available.

now you have verstille cockerels with different style ,if you picked up mostly pullets from your line than you will be able to breed better stock ,GreatSong will be usefull for back crossing to reinforce the genes of your lost line .
you have rooster to fix colour
rooster to fix type tail
rooster to fix comb tail and so far no parasitic white .
look me how many time I have started all over never lost my love for marans always moving forward ,it is a way of life ,we have to keep moving forward ,it is the only thing we can do .
all the best my friend .

I thought of you starting over all those times.

I just needed to stand back and fix my head.

There is no white at all so far in these guys. They are not agressive and they each have something I need.

The pullets I know what their faults and strong points will be. I know them 4 generations back.

I am happy.

Their a wonderful breed to have!

You'll find this funny. My son (6) reads very well and watched me on here. He decided he loves the name Punky and decided to name his 2 favorite pullets Punky and Funky. So, @Punkybrewster you have a chicken named after you. :)
That's neat...
For those that don't know
