International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Not well! I think her foot got frostbite.
I havnt dealt with frostbit foot personally but I have seen the recovery. It would depend how much of the foot is involved.

It is also a lot of work compaired to comb frostbite.

There are some very good threads dealing with it. With photos which help a lot.

If you are interested in treatment.

Maybe I need to go to whole grain. With the ruff winters. It needs to be good longer than a week. We get snowed in and may not leave for a while.

these days it is colder than usual. my chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, partridges and pheasants are on whole corn/wheat/barley. quails get whole wheat and mash and pheasants and partridges get mash as well. they all are fine. I even get a lot of eggs.

I usually stock up on layers pellets when I can get them cheap from someone I know, because I can be confident they’ll last a while in the shed, (£5 a 40lbs bag rather than £12+) and pick up fresh cracked corn and wheat when I need it. I use a ratio of 1 bag of layers to about a third of grains, stored in containers in each pen for a week or so. The only problems I get are if the containers aren’t shut properly and get damp, but generally this doesn’t happen.
This works well for me, gives the chooks more variety than pellets alone, is mostly mess free to stop attracting rats (I find the dust from layers mash gets left for rats), keeps the yolks orange, and is the most cost effective solution I have. Obviously this is very dependent on a person’s location, contacts, etc.

my chickens didn't eat pellets. I had to put some water in and make a sort of paste then added whole grains. that's how they ate it. never bought pellets again.

I agree but Im old fashioned that way. Haha

A lot use the cloud? Its secure from what ive heard.
MY kids could figure this out. I will just stick with pen and paper I can touch. Lol

one click and cloud is gone. a few months ago viber did a magic click and half of my contacts are gone. still cannot get in touch with some people abroad. it happened to all viber users not only to me. therefore what is important to me stays with me, not in the clouds or elsewhere.

If you have frostbit toes, they will turn black and fall off. Your best bet is to keep it clean until that happens, not much else you can do. The wound will need to be kept clean when it first falls off, I had a rooster get frostbit toes and he decided to scratch around in the hay while the wound wasn't totally healed, he got some grass seed heads inside his feet! We did manage to cut them out, but the bumblefoot from that was unreal. If you face gangrene, watch out for the live flesh turning a sickly greenish color and smelling bad, thats gangrene. If she is acting feverish, antibiotics work.

The hatch was a fail.... I wasn't properly set up and neglected to calibrate incubator, at 99.5 F actual inside read 90.
I would've been upset if I had lost Raven but otherwise this was working with not knowing the sire again and wrong time of cold winter.
So back on plan. I'm ordering a Govee, and I'm looking into a better candler. @Punkybrewster I took a screenshot of yours to look into.
I was rushing to get the new/revamped brooder pen done so I can slow down on that now and throw more detail into it I wanted, mainly the wall that connects to the Marans coop I want to be see thru for line of site with a pop door for integration.

And I'll be doing a hatch or 3 when the weather breaks.

But this is where I need everyone's help, who to mate up first.
My thought process is for the 1st hatch...21 eggs (3 sets of 7) so....
Kong x Joannie because I want more 'Angels' first and foremost.
Kong x Angel (see above 🙂)
And then... 🤔winging it.

But that's just my thinking. I need guidance and critiques of all my Marans. (I've got 2 that are for positive culls).

And/or should I bring in outside eggs?

you have enough birds to work with. I wouldn't mess up with the unknown genes.
