International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here's pics of the 5 from Betty I'm watching, 4 boys, 1 girl. (Just took these pics a couple nights ago). I'm not sure which one has the head spot. The one boy that has a lot of copper coming in, I leg banded early on because he was the only boy that was mossy in the wings so I'm watching him also.

This guy front and center might be 'spot', but not sure.
But what I am seeing is these will be 8 weeks on Wednesday, and on 2 or 3 of the 4, copper is just started to come in and normally copper is flowing by 2 weeks on my boys.

What's that tell me? Not much yet, but all signs point to I might be headed in the right direction..🤗

The 2 pullets are no good for breeding. Their eyes are completely black. No yellow.
Well, I took my time to really look at them this morning. Turns out Maya has lighter eyes. A bit marbled, not completely orange, but not black, more like a dark orange. So maybe Mysteria eyes will change with time.

Yes I am reading this thread. I am at page 1900. So much info. I am taking notes. This thread is gold. I am just so eager to know if Pinkybrewster got SOP marans and how Chickengr became the Maran Birches Godess. I can't wait.

Here's a decent example of where I'm getting at..
This is Betty. She's pitch black, no copper at all. And she mostly lays a #4, light #5 with darker speckles. So theoretically she's not a Marans according to what I posted in my above post.

But she's an asset to my program to at least test mate because my Kong is over colored in his chest and his 'type' is not complete. (His chest is wide but narrows towards rear)
Betty is a big girl, and her being all black may fix Kongs progeny to have correct coloring. I've got the 3 pullets, no cockerels from the Easter hatch that are mossy I'm still watching. So, she might not be a pullet line hen.
But I got no boys from her so I did another hatch.
The other 5 I just hatched at the end of May, I have 4 cockerels and 1 pullet. Got my boys...😉 1 of which has a brown head spot which indicates purity.

So I wait and watch... And if the boys fix Kongs over colored chest and hopefully 'type' at the same time, Betty now just went from being not a 'Marans' technically speaking to my 'Golden Girl' , my cockerel line hen.
It's wishful thinking at this point, but that's why we test mate and we watch them grow.
It's all about balancing out each individual quality and what each bird contributes as an asset in our flock.

If we immediately eliminate everything wrong, we're throwing away great things also.

Hope this helps...🙂
I didn't know Maran eggs came speckled. I am excited for you.

Betty is all black, I remember reading Chookman having an all black line. Are you planning on going that way in the future?

If I remember correctly, @Chooks man had Black Marans which is different variety from the Black Coppers.
