International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here's little man with the head spot from Kong x Betty. 7 weeks old. Everyone knows my boys throw copper by 2 weeks old. So this is a very welcome change. I have 1 more just like him but without the head spot, 1 that's close but a little mossy in back and the last was mossy at hatch and super over colored now.
Super excited to watch these ones grow. 🤗

He looks BIG . Big feet, nice eyes. Can't wait to see how he grows. The head spot means purity meaning what? He came from long line of pure marans from France?

Do you have a picture of the mossiness I see you guys talking abt?
As far as I know, it's just a sign he's pure BCM. I need more info on this, myself but was told leg band and keep safe.

So he's a keeper for sure 🙂

Well, I took my time to really look at them this morning. Turns out Maya has lighter eyes. A bit marbled, not completely orange, but not black, more like a dark orange. So maybe Mysteria eyes will change with time.

Yes I am reading this thread. I am at page 1900. So much info. I am taking notes. This thread is gold. I am just so eager to know if Pinkybrewster got SOP marans and how Chickengr became the Maran Birches Godess. I can't wait.

it is @Bantambird that has great birchen (black silver) marans.

My 13 month old BCM rooster has lost most of his tail this week. Is it too early for molt. He didn’t go through a fall molt last year because he was too young. He has always had a yellow halo in his heckles but they are really getting pale. I assume the sun bleaches feathers much like it can with human hair

Here's pics of the 5 from Betty I'm watching, 4 boys, 1 girl. (Just took these pics a couple nights ago). I'm not sure which one has the head spot. The one boy that has a lot of copper coming in, I leg banded early on because he was the only boy that was mossy in the wings so I'm watching him also.

This guy front and center might be 'spot', but not sure.
But what I am seeing is these will be 8 weeks on Wednesday, and on 2 or 3 of the 4, copper is just started to come in and normally copper is flowing by 2 weeks on my boys.

What's that tell me? Not much yet, but all signs point to I might be headed in the right direction..🤗

@wrathsfarm I think you missed my question. You said Miss Betty is pitch black. Will you in the future start an all black line just like Chooks Man had? I think and all black rooster Maran is pretty majestic. Wish I had space 😪 for breeding.

Is this rooster mixed?

Nope I caught it... Maybe 🤣

These are 2 separate varieties Chooks man has that I believe your thinking of.

Chooks man has (I believe, I'd have to look back).....Black Marans and Black Coppers and each has their own Standard.

I don't think he was producing a black line from his Black Coppers because they wouldn't be pure not conforming to either standard, (Black Marans or BCM) unless he was doing it just for fun...I can't recall seeing any of these from him, tho.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but Betty is an over melanized Black Copper that doesn't adhere to the BCM Standard and she cannot in no way be called a Black Marans because she's hiding the copper. (Recessive?) So she's still a Black Copper, and not a Black Marans.

Hope I'm explaining that correctly.

As far as your question to me? No, I'm breeding my Black Coppers to SOP. If I decided I wanted an all black line, I would get pure Black Marans.

If an all black roo was useful to me, I could see it being fun to have but at the moment I'm trying to get my stock towards SOP, where an under colored or all black rooster would be useful for over colored hens to correct their progeny... whereas I'm trying to correct Kongs over coloring and this is where Betty fits in. I'm opposite.

Too much going on in that coop to have any fun...🤗

And of course also trying to get the BBS Silver flock established. 🙂
