International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

No, I haven't. I don't know genetics enough to try this yet.

I thought it would be bad to introduce the silver to gold. Much like gold to silver which I see a lot of in the limited people I've found near me with BBS Silvers. Mind you these are Craigslist ads not breeders like @Bantambird.

I've yet to find any breeders other than her which don't really matter now that I've got the best.

That's all I really know.
I am just a hobbyist, only knowledgeable enough to be dangerous. I just happen to have taken a liking to the silver based marans.

BCMs are Black Copper Marans.

Are silvers BSMs (Black/Birchen Silver Marans) or SBMs (Silver Birchen Marans).

I know it’s arbitrary but I’ve realised that I used both, which one does everyone else use or does it not matter?

I feel BSM makes more sense when comparing to BCM, as the first letter can be changed for blues, splashes etc and the second letter can be changed for copper or silver. But I’ve mostly heard this colour called Silver Birchen, even though Coppers are not called Copper Birchen.
There was a fuss over the usage of the word birchen a while back, although I think (personally) that it is semantics. The American Poultry Association stated that using the word birchen to denote the color of the silver based marans was poor wording because birchen as a color in other breeds has a lot of silver lacing on the breast as per old english or modern english games. In the case of the marans, most breeders aim for limited breast lacing to mimic their counterparts in the black copper group. That is when the term black silver came into usage. Fun times.

I got my first FBCM egg today. I am so excited. I cannot really say for now where it is on the scale, but hopefully it will remain this dark. It is also small, hopefully by spring it will be regular size.
Mysteria laid it. Now waiting to see Maya and Gypsy's eggs( I am secretly hoping Gypsy would lay a dark olive egg).

And too humble...your Marans are gorgeous and I'm honored to have a couple.

So it is said.. Black Silvers? Or Silver Blacks? You said Black Silvers in the post before so I'm assuming that's the correct term.

He is checking out his future ladies. He is mating the 3 yr old "cougars" already since no older rooster to challenge him. I am trying to get recording of his crow

Your cockerel looks like he is a mix breed. Very likely an Olive Egger. My guess is OE based on the beard feathers and comb type. There is nothing wrong with OEs I have several myself. I’m only bringing it up because this is a breeding to SOP thread. If you intention is to breed him you will not get full blooded Marans. If your main goal is colored eggs he could make a great choice to these breed and see what you get.

We do play really loose with the SOP breeding in this thread. It’s littered with pictures of other breeds and cross breeds so please feel free to hang around. This is a pretty active thread filled with friendly and very knowledgeable members.

I had an OE that looked very similar to your cockerel. attached is a picture of him
