International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

He may still be useful if you have any overmelanized pullets. Like Keith said in an earlier post, overcolored cockerels can balance out the excess black on overmelamized hens to put better copper in the hackles of the female offspring. The excess black on the hens will balance out the excess copper of the cockerel at the same time. If you have room for several different breeding pens that is. We keep extra cockerels in 4x4' stag pens. We also use the small 4x4 pens to single mate as well.

I'll have to see what I can do for separate breeding pens. My girls are too dark but That's why I'm confused as to how I ended up with such an over colored boy lol

AuroraDream26,

Thought I would share a pic of my over-colored cockerel - his name is Otis. He is 7 months old in this pic. You can go to Post #483 to see what he looked like at 4.5 months old. They change a lot over their first 18 months. Otis is the smallest of my 3 breeders and has developed a wry tail within the last 6-8 weeks. Despite his faults he has nice copper color on his hackles, saddle feathers, and ear tufts. He has more copper on his chest than I would prefer but he will add the proper color to his female progeny.

Thank you @kcrandall for the pics of your guy!

I finally managed to get a few pics of my little colorful cockerel for you guys. He has some shafting that I didn't notice till I looked at the pics. It's hard to really see in the red brooder light and since he's not social at all, I haven't attempted to pick him up.

AuroraDream, He's definitely over-colored but he will change so much over the next few months. His ear tufts are showing good copper at an early age. I look forward to seeing what he looks like at 6 months. Keith

Sorry I did not mean to upset you or been nasty to you . my apology if I said some thing wrong . good luck to you . Chooks man
Aw Chooks Man. It was really a very small matter! Thank you for the apology but I was too easily offended, a habit I am working to break. You who are so knowledgable and generously share your experience are worthy of all chicken lovers respect. I forgive you your teeny, tiny comment. I ask you pardon for my easily ruffled feathers and my egg bound brain. You are as kind and respectful of us backyard chicken folks as you are the well known professional and learned participants in the chicken coop. May God bless you with glorious presents (presence) particularly during this Christmas season. You, Chooks Man, enrich our lives!!!

Otis is a true handsome .
I ll use him even if he did not have a tail because of the sublime red copper color he posses plus look at his feet . medium size . light grey with some pink coming through them . well feathered and the best thing they are strait and well spaced indication of well developed breast .

he have a lot great thing too .
well marked chest . it isn t over marked as a breeder is perfect for the pullet line

I think he is more proud of his comb ,he know it is the best one in the forum . Breed from him please .

his copper coloration is hard to come by Wry tail is easy to breed out but Rich red copper and strait leg are very hard to show up .

Two new pics of Pinky Pie. His tail is a little fuller/longer, and he has a little bit more copper.

For some reason, his saddle feathers look a lot lighter than his hackles in this pic.

He's a very good roo who takes perfect care of his girls. He has this strange thing about shoes, though, and if I wear anything other than my muck boots, he tries to attack them, lol.

Pinky Pie is a good boy .he seem to give you a hard time about what sort of shoes you should where . maybe he was a shoes maker in his previous life .

I m not worry about his saddle copper is lighter than his hackle ,that is ok . a problem I see is his access fluff around his thigh . they should be held tight close to the body .
